Product Description
Simple silhouettes are ideal for allowing a design element to truly stand out. This versatile top is intentionally designed with clean lines so the visual focus is on the gorgeous lace that arcs from shoulder to shoulder.
The pretty lace section is actually comprised of a double eyelet lace panel that is repeated multiple times and staggered.
Knit this sweater seamlessly from the bottom up in the round. At the armholes, stitches are added at either end for the slight extended sleeves, then the front is completed to the shoulders first, with a little bit of neckline shaping. The back is knit to the top with short row shaping a 3-needle bind off for the shoulders.
Finally, the wide, shaped neckline is finished off with ribbing.
Sample is knit in a lovely linen and alpaca blend that gives the sweater a delicate, rustic look. Easily substitute another soft fingering-weight with great stitch definition.
The sweater is knit to a cropped length, but can be easily lengthened. Lace is charted only.
Ivy Sweater (#309) by SweaterBabe.com
What Is Being Made
The Ivy Sweater is a versatile knitted top featuring a distinctive lace design element. This garment showcases clean, simple silhouettes intentionally designed to highlight a gorgeous lace panel that arcs gracefully from shoulder to shoulder across the upper body. The sweater combines minimalist construction with eye-catching stitch work, making it an ideal project for knitters seeking to balance simplicity with visual interest.
Construction Method
This sweater is knit seamlessly from the bottom up in the round, which eliminates the need for seaming and creates a smooth, continuous fabric. The construction process begins at the lower edge and progresses upward, with strategic increases and shaping techniques applied at key points. The front and back are worked separately after the armholes are established, allowing for customized shaping in each section.
Techniques Used
- Seamless construction: The sweater is worked in the round from the bottom up, creating a garment without side seams for a polished finish
- Armhole shaping: Stitches are strategically added at either end of the armholes to create slight extended sleeves
- Neckline shaping: The front features subtle shaping at the neckline for a refined fit
- Short row shaping: The back incorporates short rows to slope the shoulders naturally, improving garment fit and drape
- Three-needle bind off: Both shoulders are joined using the three-needle bind off technique, creating a strong, flexible seam at the shoulder line
Stitches Featured
The primary visual element of the Ivy Sweater is a double eyelet lace panel that forms the signature design. This lace panel is repeated multiple times throughout the pattern and staggered strategically to create the distinctive curved arc that flows from shoulder to shoulder. Eyelet lace stitches create small, decorative holes in the fabric that add texture and visual lightness to the garment while maintaining structural integrity.
Materials
The Ivy Sweater pattern calls for 4-ply yarn weight, which provides a lightweight, versatile fabric suitable for a top-weight garment. Standard knitting needles appropriate for 4-ply yarn are required. The specific yardage requirements and needle sizes would be detailed within the complete downloadable PDF pattern from SweaterBabe.com.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle lace work and more complex shaping techniques. The combination of seamless construction, lace panels, and shoulder shaping provides an excellent learning opportunity for developing advanced knitting techniques.
