Product Description

As a knitter from the Aran Islands, I know that most hats there are needed to keep you warm and dry: a hat with a hole at the top means you’ll get wet! However, as the Aran style has travelled the world, it has proven capable of adapting to modern fashion, and the Aran Messy Bun Hat is no exception. Designed to let your messy bun or ponytail flow out of the top, this beanie style hat is knit in the round, on two sizes of circular needles, and features criss-crossing cables that rise seamlessly from the brim to the crown.

The cabling pattern is not overly complicated, but there is some adjusting of the stitch marker to ensure that the cabling pattern stays seamless throughout. I would consider this a pattern suitable for intermediate knitters.

The beanie comes in three sizes: Small, Medium, Large, and is suitable for any Aran yarn. However, Aran yarn can vary greatly in thickness: instructions are given on which size would best suit your yarn gauge.

Aran Messy Bun Hat: Modern Knit Beanie with Traditional Cable Details

What Is Being Made

The Aran Messy Bun Hat is a contemporary beanie-style hat designed by AranAccessories that combines traditional Aran Island knitting heritage with modern fashion functionality. This knit hat features a distinctive opening at the crown, allowing wearers to pull their messy bun or ponytail through the top while keeping the head warm. The design respects the practical knitting traditions of the Aran Islands—where hats are crafted to protect against wind and rain—while adapting to current styling preferences for casual, relaxed headwear.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

This intermediate-level project is knit in the round using two sizes of circular needles, a technique that creates seamless, tubular fabric ideal for hat construction. The hat is worked from the brim upward to the crown, with ribbing at the base that provides stretch and ensures a comfortable, secure fit. The most distinctive technical feature is the criss-crossing cable pattern that rises seamlessly from the brim to the crown, creating visual interest and textural depth throughout the hat.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The hat employs ribbing at the brim, which creates vertical columns of knit and purl stitches that allow the fabric to stretch and recover, essential for a comfortable fit. The primary decorative element consists of cables—twisted stitches that cross over one another to create the signature criss-crossing pattern characteristic of Aran knitting. These cables rise continuously from the ribbed brim to the crown, providing both structural interest and the textural quality Aran knitting is known for.

Sizing and Fit Details

The pattern is available in three sizes to accommodate different head sizes and age groups:

  • Small: Designed for children, with a hat circumference of 16 inches (41 cm) unworn
  • Medium: Sized for adult women with smaller head sizes, measuring 17 inches (44 cm) in circumference unworn
  • Large: Sized for adult women with larger head sizes, measuring 18 inches (46 cm) in circumference unworn

All three sizes measure 8 inches (20.5 cm) from brim to crown, maintaining consistent proportions. The opening at the top where the ponytail or messy bun emerges measures 7 inches (18 cm) in circumference across all sizes. The ribbing throughout the hat allows for additional stretch, ensuring a comfortable and secure fit even as the wearer moves.

Yarn and Materials

This project is worked in aran weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that provides excellent stitch definition for cable work while remaining manageable for knitters at the intermediate level. Aran weight yarn is substantial enough to create a warm, durable hat while still allowing the intricate cable details to be clearly visible. The pattern requires two sizes of circular needles appropriate for aran weight yarn, enabling the knitter to work the ribbed brim on smaller needles for a tighter gauge and the body on larger needles for a more relaxed fabric.

Difficulty Level

Rated as an intermediate project, the Aran Messy Bun Hat is suitable for knitters with some experience. The intermediate difficulty reflects the cable work required and the need to manage two different needle sizes while working in the round. Knitters should be comfortable with basic increases and decreases, reading cable charts, and maintaining even tension across circular needles.
