Product Description
With simple playful shapes and bright colours, you are sure to be Blithe & Lightsome in this cardigan!
This is a pattern for a top down circular yoke cardigan with a scoop neck (instruction notes are included if you would like a closer fitted neckline). Stitches are cast on for the rib neckline, then short rows are worked for neck shaping. The yoke chart is worked in chosen size and then sleeve sts are separated from body sts. Underarm sts are cast on/picked up and each element is worked separately to the edge rib, before bind off.
Since it is top down, sizes may be easily adjusted for best fit. If you need more room over the body or upper arms, simply cast on/pick up additional sts after the yoke is worked. Conversely, you have smaller arms and need fewer sts, do not work the last increase over the yoke chart.
Blithe & Lightsome Cardigan by Bunnymuff
What is Being Made
The Blithe & Lightsome is a knitted cardigan designed by Mona Zillah under the Bunnymuff label. This is an intermediate-level knitting project worked in the round using stranded colorwork techniques, creating a sophisticated garment suitable for knitters with some experience in multi-color patterning.
Craft and Primary Technique
This cardigan is created using knitting as the primary craft. The design employs stranded colorwork, a traditional technique where multiple colors of yarn are carried across the fabric to create intricate patterns. The garment is worked in the round on circular needles, which is a common approach for seamless cardigan construction that allows for efficient colorwork integration throughout the piece.
Stitches and Construction Details
The pattern utilizes stockinette stitch as the primary fabric base, worked over circular needles in the round. The gauge is specified at 26 stitches by 30 rounds over 4 inches (10 centimeters) on 3.25mm needles in stockinette stitch. The pattern includes button band sections that are worked separately on smaller needles, using a backwards loop cast-on technique for attaching these bands to the main body. Sleeve shaping is accomplished using double-pointed needles to transition from the main circular needle work.
Yarn and Materials
The cardigan is designed for 4-ply weight yarn, specifically Shetland Spindrift by Jamieson's of Shetland Fingering weight yarn, which is 100% Shetland wool with approximately 115 yards (105 meters) per 25-gram ball. The pattern calls for multiple yarn quantities depending on size: Main Color (MC) in Leprechaun ranging from 9 to 22 balls across size ranges, Contrast Color 1 (CC1) in Petrol at 2 to 4 balls, Contrast Color 2 (CC2) in Eggshell at 2 to 4 balls, and Contrast Color 3 (CC3) in Damask at 2 to 4 balls, depending on the finished size.
Needles Required
- 2.5mm (US No. 1.5) circular needle, 24 inches (60 centimeters) for button bands
- 2.75mm (US No. 2) circular needle, 24 inches (60 centimeters) with double-pointed needles for sleeve work
- 3.25mm (US No. 3) circular needle, 40 inches (101 centimeters) with double-pointed needles for sleeve shaping
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic techniques and are ready to tackle stranded colorwork and seamless garment construction. The combination of circular needle work, multi-color patterning, and fitted shaping requires solid foundational skills.
