Product Description
Recently I discovered a new heel variation and made myself a pair using a simple knit-purl-pattern. Maybe you want some for yourself, so I wrote down my notes. This is not a real “pattern” but rather notes how to implement the “broken rib” pattern and how to work the heel. You will also find a size chart.
I learned about this heel variation in a German video where it is called “Streifenferse” (“stripe heel”), but at Ravelry I also found a similar heel variation called “hybrid heel”. It is a variation to the short-row-heel where you work wedges using short rows. The big difference is doubling the stitch where you turn, resulting in more stitches to work at the heel diagonal and a better fit. This heel will fit a foot where the short-row-heel is too tight.
The pattern contains one file with the English and German version. Please respect our environment and print only those pages you need.
Broken Rib Hybrid Heel Socks by Stefanie Bold
What is Being Made
These are knitted socks featuring a broken rib stitch pattern throughout the leg with a specialized hybrid heel construction. The design combines a simple knit-purl pattern with an innovative heel variation, making them suitable for knitters seeking both aesthetic appeal and improved fit. The socks are designed to accommodate feet where traditional short-row heels may feel too snug.
Techniques Used
The primary construction technique involves working in the round on circular needles or double-pointed needles. The socks utilize short-row shaping for the heel, but with a distinctive modification that sets this design apart from conventional approaches.
The hybrid heel technique (also known as "Streifenferse" or "stripe heel") is the signature element of this pattern. This heel variation improves upon the traditional short-row heel by doubling the stitch at each turn point. This doubling creates additional stitches along the heel diagonal, resulting in a better overall fit and preventing the heel from becoming too tight—a common issue with standard short-row heel construction.
The heel is worked using wedge shaping through short rows, a technique that creates the curved contour necessary for proper heel fit and comfort.
Stitches Used
The socks feature a broken rib pattern composed of alternating knit and purl stitches. This simple knit-purl pattern creates visual texture and subtle vertical lines throughout the leg of the sock while remaining accessible to beginner-level knitters.
Materials
These socks are designed to be worked in 4-ply yarn weight, which is ideal for creating well-fitting, durable everyday socks. The pattern includes a size chart to help knitters select appropriate yardage and needle sizes for their intended foot measurements.
Pattern Details
This is presented as pattern notes rather than a fully formatted traditional pattern, documenting how to implement the broken rib stitch pattern and execute the hybrid heel technique. The designer, Stefanie Bold, created this resource to share her discovery of the heel variation and provide fellow knitters with the information needed to replicate the design. The pattern was last revised on May 29, 2017.
