What is Being Made

The Butterfly Cupcake is a charming knitted toy designed by independent designer Louisa Noble. This whimsical project combines a cupcake base with an integrated butterfly design, creating a three-dimensional decorative piece that stands approximately 5cm high with a 5cm diameter base. The finished toy is a single sculptural form that resembles both a cupcake and a butterfly simultaneously, making it an imaginative and playful knitting project suitable for intermediate-level crafters.

Construction Method and Techniques

This knitting project is constructed in one continuous piece from the bottom upwards, which significantly reduces finishing work by requiring only a single seam at the end. The construction begins with a small cast-on at the base and uses strategic increases to build the cupcake form. The pattern incorporates several advanced techniques including the use of 3 double pins (also called stitch holders or DPNs) starting from the 7th row to manage multiple sections of stitches simultaneously. A picot edge is picked up and knitted as a decorative finishing detail, adding a delicate, scalloped border typical of cupcake frosting.

Stitches and Stitch Work

The pattern employs fundamental knitting stitches combined with shaping techniques. Key stitches include:

• Purl stitches (P) – used to create smooth fabric sections
• Knit stitches (K) – forming the primary fabric structure
• Increases (Inc 1) – executed by knitting into the front and back of a single stitch, creating new stitches to expand the cupcake shape
• Picot edge – a decorative picked-up and knitted border that creates a dainty, ornamental finish

The strategic placement of increases, particularly the pattern of increasing 4 times in row 2 and 8 times in row 4, creates the rounded, dimensional form characteristic of a cupcake.

Materials Required

This project uses DK weight yarn (also called light worsted or 8-ply), which is ideal for creating defined stitch definition and precise shaping in small toys. The yarn requirements include:

• 50g white DK yarn for the cupcake base
• 30g each of three contrasting DK colours – one for the icing/frosting layer and two for the butterfly wings

Additional embellishment materials include approximately 20 seed beads in contrasting colours, with 2 white beads designated for eyes and 2 larger beads for accent details. A small piece of stiff cardboard provides structure and support, while polyester stuffing fills the toy to create dimension and shape retention.

Tools and Equipment

The project requires a pair of size 11 (3mm) needles for the main knitting work, with 3 double pins of the same 3mm size used as stitch holders during construction. The 3mm needle size is standard for DK weight yarn and provides appropriate gauge for creating a compact, well-defined toy with crisp stitch definition.
