What is Being Made

The Cancer Dishcloth is a knitted dishcloth featuring an astrological zodiac design representing the Cancer sign (June 21 – July 22). This project creates a practical kitchen textile with decorative appeal, working up to approximately 8" x 8" in finished size. The design can be adapted into larger projects such as blanket squares by adjusting yarn weight and needle size accordingly.

Craft and Techniques

This dishcloth is created using the slip stitch or mosaic knitting technique, a method that produces striking visual patterns while remaining beginner-friendly. Mosaic knitting works quickly and creates a satisfying visual progression as the design emerges. The pattern is well-suited for creating high-contrast colorwork effects without the complexity of traditional stranded colorwork, making it ideal for knitters new to patterned projects.

The mosaic technique involves slipping stitches purlwise to create the pattern, allowing knitters to work with only one color per row while still achieving multi-colored designs. This approach eliminates the need to manage multiple yarn strands simultaneously, reducing tension issues common in other colorwork methods.

Stitches Used

• Slip stitch (sl) – stitches are slipped purlwise throughout the pattern
• Knit stitch (k1) – basic knit stitch for pattern construction
• Mosaic stitch – the primary stitch pattern creating the Cancer zodiac design

Materials and Specifications

Yarn: Approximately 100 yards total in DK or worsted weight. The sample uses 50 yards of white (main color) and 50 yards of blue (contrasting color). The pattern recommends cotton or hemp yarn for superior heat resistance and durability in kitchen use, though acrylic or wool are viable alternatives if creating blanket squares or decorative pieces. Sample yarns used include Lily Sugar 'n Cream and Bernat Handicrafter brands.

Needles: US 5 (3.75 mm) needles – either straight or circular needles work equally well for this project.

Additional Notions: A darning needle is required for weaving in yarn ends.

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern specifies a gauge of 20 stitches and 44 rows in mosaic stitch using worsted weight yarn, measured over a 4" swatch before blocking. Using the recommended needle sizes and worsted weight yarn produces a finished dishcloth of approximately 8" x 8". Larger finished pieces can be achieved by using heavier yarn weights or larger needle sizes.

Pattern Difficulty

This project is rated as beginner level, making it an excellent introduction to mosaic knitting and colorwork techniques. The straightforward stitch vocabulary and logical pattern progression allow newer knitters to build confidence while creating a functional and visually impressive finished object.
