Product Description

(Definition: Josy is an abbreviation of ‘jar cosy’!)

This is made using leftover yarn (from my Carnival Heart Pillow pattern) and consists of single crochet and double crochet.

I think by alternating these stitches it gives a fun textured finish, and using two different types of yarn (one for each section) really makes the colours stand out from each other even though they both have very similar shades of orange.

This josy is fun and simple to make, you just need to know how to crochet in the round. Although there is a small decrease in the centre to match the curve in the jar you can continue to work in straight stitches so that the josy is straight in the centre.

Carnival Josy Crochet Jar Cover

What is Being Made

The Carnival Josy is a decorative crochet jar cover designed by Kayleigh's Creative World. This project creates a festive covering for large jars with an 8.5cm base diameter. The finished piece combines vibrant colors to add a carnival-inspired aesthetic to kitchen storage or decorative displays.

Craft and Technique Overview

This is a crochet project suitable for beginner-level crafters. The pattern is worked in the round continuously, meaning you will work in spiral rounds rather than joining with slip stitches at the end of each round (unless specifically instructed otherwise). A stitch marker is used to mark the beginning of each round, helping you keep track of where your rounds start as you work in this continuous method.

Stitches Used

The Carnival Josy utilizes fundamental crochet stitches appropriate for beginners:

  • Chain (ch) – the foundation stitch for starting the project
  • Single crochet (sc) – a basic short stitch for structure and detail
  • Double crochet (dc) – a taller stitch that creates fabric with good drape
  • Treble crochet (tr) – an even taller stitch for lighter, more open sections
  • Single crochet 2 together (sc2tog) – a decrease technique for shaping
  • Double crochet 2 together (dc2tog) – another decrease method for tapering
  • Treble crochet 2 together (tr2tog) – a decrease using the taller treble stitch
  • Slip stitch (sl st) – used selectively to join rounds when the pattern specifies
  • Back Loop Only (BLO) – a technique working through only the back loop of stitches for textural effects

Materials Required

This project calls for chunky weight yarn in two colors:

  • Yarn A: Paintbox Yarn Simply Seville Orange (color 318) – 1 skein of 50g chunky yarn
  • Yarn B: James C Brett Party Multicoloured (PT1) – 1 skein of 50g chunky yarn

Additional materials include:

  • One 6mm crochet hook – appropriately sized for chunky weight yarn
  • One stitch marker – for tracking round beginnings
  • One darning needle – for weaving in yarn ends
  • Scissors – for cutting yarn
  • One sugar jar with approximately 8.5cm base diameter – the item to be covered

Pattern Notes and Terminology

The Carnival Josy pattern is written using UK crochet terminology, with US terms provided in parentheses for international crocheters. This is important as UK and US stitch names differ (for example, UK double crochet equals US single crochet). The pattern includes standard abbreviations for all stitches and techniques, making it accessible to those familiar with crochet notation.

This free downloadable PDF pattern from Kayleigh's Creative World offers a quick, beginner-friendly project using minimal yardage and basic techniques, making it an ideal introduction to working with chunky yarn and continuous rounds.
