Product Description
Clandestine is a triangular shawl of modular construction. It's worked bottom-up in horizontal rows of elements, and can be knit any size. Each row has one more motif than the previous one. The yarn within the row is continuous; there is no need to break it. With 7 elements on top, it measured 140cm wide X 48 cm tall, and weighted 116 g before adding the trim; which gives us about 4.15 g of yarn per motif. The yarn distribution between MC and CC is about the same, but I'd say I used slightly more CC than MC. The trim ate up about 30 g of black yarn. So, estimating the amount of fingering weight yarn for the shawl as pictured, you will need: -100 g of MC ( about 400m) - 60 g of CC (about 240-250m) You will also need short circular needles 3.0 - 3.5mm for the motifs, and same size needles on a long cord for the bottom trim only. Gauge - not that important, but I got each motif approximately 20 X 12 cm. Techniques used: garter, short rows, decreases/increases.
Clandestine Triangular Shawl by Kulabra Designs
What is Being Made
Clandestine is a triangular shawl featuring modular construction, designed by Natalia Moreva for Kulabra Designs. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a sophisticated accessory that can be customized to any desired size through its scalable modular design. The sample pictured measures 140cm wide by 48cm tall and weighs approximately 116 grams before the finishing trim is added.
Construction Method and Techniques
The shawl employs a distinctive bottom-up construction method worked in horizontal rows of individual elements or motifs. Each successive row contains one additional motif compared to the previous row, creating the characteristic triangular silhouette. The modular approach allows crafters to determine the final dimensions by choosing how many elements to include on the top row—the pictured version features 7 elements at the widest point.
A key advantage of this construction technique is that yarn remains continuous throughout each row, eliminating the need to break and rejoin yarn between individual motifs. This streamlines the knitting process and reduces finishing work. The shawl concludes with a knitted trim that adds approximately 30 grams of yarn to the total weight.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
While specific stitch names are not detailed in the pattern documentation provided, the design utilizes a repeating motif structure that forms the geometric foundation of each modular element. The motifs are worked using standard knitting techniques suitable for intermediate-level crafters, making this an accessible project for those with foundational knitting skills who wish to explore modular design principles.
Yarn and Materials
Clandestine is designed for fingering weight yarn, accommodating multiple yarn weights within the 3-ply, 4-ply, 6-ply, and sport weight categories. The pattern employs two colors: a main color (MC) and a contrasting color (CC), distributed in approximately equal proportions throughout the shawl, with slightly more contrasting color used overall.
For the pictured shawl, the following yarn quantities are recommended:
- Approximately 100 grams of main color yarn (roughly 400 meters)
- Approximately 60 grams of contrasting color yarn (roughly 240–250 meters)
- Approximately 30 grams of black yarn for the finishing trim
Each individual motif requires approximately 4.15 grams of yarn when worked at the pictured gauge. Needles required include short circular needles in sizes 3.0–3.5mm for working the motifs, and the same needle size on a long circular cord for executing the bottom trim. Gauge is noted as relatively flexible for this design, with each motif measuring approximately 20 centimeters wide by 12 centimeters tall in the sample.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to explore more complex construction methods such as modular knitting and color work integration.
