Product Description

Sometimes you have a small amount of some precious yarn—handspun, hand dyed, a gift, or a luxury item that you could afford just one skein of. You think it’s enough for a hat, but adding in the swatch could just put you over.

Sometimes you just want to jump into a project and not worry about working that swatch, particularly for something as simple as a hat or other small accessory.

This pair of matching hats are written to be “gaugeless”. They use two different techniques to achieve a good fit. In the first hat (shown in Adult L on James), you will start by working a brim sideways to length, then will pick up and knit stitches for the crown. In the second hat (shown in Adult M on Katherine), you start at the top of the crown and increase to certain diameter points, then end by working the brim down to length.

This pair of hats was designed as a wedding present for some cousins. They use the same stitch on the brim, stockinette on the crown, and an I-cord edge.

Dankers Hats by Katherine Vaughan

What Is Being Made

Dankers Hats is a downloadable knitting pattern collection designed by Katherine Vaughan that offers multiple hat designs suitable for the entire family. The collection includes patterns sized for children and adults in three adult sizes (Small, Medium, and Large), with finished hat circumferences ranging from 16 to 22 inches [40.5 to 56 centimeters] and heights from 7 to 9 inches [18 to 23 centimeters]. This versatile pattern set allows knitters to create fitted, wearable hats for various head sizes using minimal yardage.

Techniques and Construction Methods

The Dankers Hats patterns employ fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate-level crafters. The designs utilize both double-pointed needles and circular needles, allowing knitters to choose their preferred method for working in the round. One pattern variation features a sideways construction method that uses a provisional cast-on technique with waste yarn, offering an alternative approach to traditional top-down or bottom-up hat shaping. This sideways knitting approach is particularly useful for maximizing precious yarn, as it allows knitters to work to the desired length without committing to a full swatch beforehand.

Stitches Used

While the pattern details specific stitch instructions within the PDF document, the designs are constructed to work with standard knitting stitches appropriate for hat construction. The patterns are engineered to create a pleasing, firm fabric suitable for winter wear and everyday use.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

The Dankers Hats patterns offer exceptional flexibility in yarn selection, accommodating a wide range of yarn weights including DK, worsted, Aran, and bulky weight yarns. Total yardage requirements are minimal, ranging from approximately 100 to 250 yards [90 to 230 meters] depending on the chosen yarn weight and hat size. This modest yardage requirement makes these patterns ideal for using precious yarns such as handspun, hand-dyed, luxury, or gift yarns where only a single skein may be available.

Essential materials include double-pointed or circular needles sized to produce a firm yet comfortable fabric with your chosen yarn, one unique stitch marker plus five additional stitch markers for tracking increases and pattern repeats, waste yarn for the provisional cast-on technique used in the sideways hat variation, and a yarn needle for weaving in ends. Needle selection is crucial to achieving the proper fabric density and drape for a well-fitting hat.

Pattern Sizing

The Dankers Hats collection provides four distinct size options: Child (18-inch [46 centimeter] head circumference), Adult Small (20-inch [51 centimeter] head circumference), Adult Medium (22-inch [56 centimeter] head circumference), and Adult Large (24-inch [61 centimeter] head circumference). This comprehensive sizing range ensures that knitters can create properly fitting hats for family members of all ages.
