Product Description

A fairytale dragon to make in whatever colour you choose. He only takes a few hours to make and will delight any child that loves fantasy. There are two options for making his eyes depending on what yarns/threads you have to hand. I made the crest with 4ply cotton but you could also use DK and it would just be a bit larger.

Dragon Finger Puppet by Rymell

Project Overview

This is a crocheted finger puppet designed in the shape of a dragon, created by independent designer Rymell. The finished toy is sized to fit over a finger, making it an ideal small amigurumi-style project perfect for play, decoration, or gift-giving. The pattern uses intermediate-level crochet techniques and is worked primarily in DK weight yarn.

What Is Being Made

A three-dimensional dragon finger puppet featuring a distinct head with eye sockets, a body worked in the round, and wing sections. The design incorporates dimensional details such as nostrils and structured eye placement to create character and visual interest in a small-scale toy format.

Crochet Techniques Used

  • Magic ring foundation: The pattern begins with a magic ring, a popular technique for starting amigurumi projects with a closed center
  • Working in the round: Both the head and body are constructed using circular crochet, building outward from a central point
  • Increases and decreases: The pattern employs increases (2dc in next st) and decreases (dc2tog) to shape the three-dimensional form and create the dragon's contours
  • Front loop only working: Round 8 specifies working in front loops only, a technique that creates texture and definition in the finished piece
  • Stitch placement for detail: Eye sockets are created using a combination of double crochet, chain, and treble stitches positioned strategically within rounds
  • Stuffing integration: The pattern includes stuffing at a specific point during construction to ensure proper shaping before final closure

Stitches Used

  • Double crochet (dc): The primary stitch throughout the pattern, forming the foundation of the head and body structure
  • Double crochet two together (dc2tog): A decrease stitch used to reduce stitch count and shape the dragon's form, particularly visible in the final rounds of the head
  • Double crochet increase (2dc in next st): Used to expand the piece and create the wider sections of the head and body
  • Treble (tr): Incorporated into the eye socket construction for textural variation
  • Half treble (htr): Also used in eye socket detail work
  • Chain (ch): Used to create the eye socket openings and spacing

Materials and Tools

This pattern requires DK weight yarn in multiple colors. Approximately 25 yards of red DK yarn is needed for the main body and head sections. Additional yardage in silver or grey DK yarn is used for the wing sections, and black yarn is included for details such as eyes or facial features. Two crochet hooks are required: a 3mm hook for the primary construction and a 2mm hook for finer detail work. Stuffing material is necessary to fill the head before closure, and the pattern uses UK crochet stitch terminology throughout.

Pattern Structure

The head is constructed over 13 rounds, beginning with a magic ring and progressing through strategic increases and decreases to form a three-dimensional shape. Eye sockets are deliberately created during the middle rounds using a combination of stitches, with instructions to push these sockets to the front of the work for proper placement. The body is worked separately in the round, with wing sections added using the grey or silver yarn. This modular construction approach is typical of amigurumi design and allows for dimensional, stuffed toys.

Difficulty Level

Classified as intermediate, this pattern requires familiarity with fundamental crochet techniques including magic rings, working in the round, and basic increases and decreases. The addition of strategic stitch placement for eye sockets and the coordination of multiple yarn colors adds complexity beyond beginner projects. Crafters should be comfortable reading pattern abbreviations and following round-by-round instructions before attempting this design.
