Product Description
Duke is cuddly and soft with a round belly and adorable tongue hanging out. :-)
Duke is a beginner level pattern, but it does use a couple of skills that are best tackled if you've already made one or two amigurumi.
The trickiest part is the rounded belly and shaped feet. It's not hard - but you have to count a lot of stitches in those sections which means you can't do it on autopilot. :-)
Don't worry - the PDF pattern has links to videos teaching you all the skills you'll need! And it contains progress photos of all the important steps, so you won’t get lost. :-)
Duke the Dog Amigurumi Toy
What Is Being Made
Duke the Dog is a 13-inch tall crocheted stuffed toy designed by Wendi Gratz. This amigurumi-style plush features a finished height of approximately 13 inches and carries a design date of May 2018. The project is ideal for crafters seeking to create a cuddly, three-dimensional canine companion through crochet techniques.
Craft and Primary Technique
This pattern is designed exclusively for crochet, utilizing amigurumi methods—the Japanese technique of creating small, stuffed crocheted toys. Amigurumi construction involves crocheting individual pieces in the round and assembling them to form a cohesive three-dimensional figure. The pattern includes detailed instructions for both basic and intermediate-level amigurumi skills, making it accessible to crafters with foundational crochet knowledge.
Stitches and Techniques Used
The pattern employs several essential crochet stitches and specialized techniques:
- Chain stitch for foundation and pattern setup
- Single crochet as the primary structural stitch
- Single crochet increase for shaping and expanding pieces
- Single crochet decrease for tapering and closing sections
- Slip knot for beginning work
- Slip stitch for joining rounds
- Standing legs technique for creating stable leg construction
- Stitch markers for tracking round progression
Assembly and Construction Methods
Duke the Dog requires assembly of multiple crocheted pieces. The pattern includes instructions for:
- Attaching arms and legs using single crochet methods
- Securing flattened pieces to the main amigurumi body
- Fastening off and finishing all components
Materials and Yarn Weight Options
This pattern accommodates a wide range of yarn weights, offering flexibility for different finished sizes and textures. Suitable yarn weights include cobweb, lace, thread, sport, DK, 3-ply, 4-ply, 6-ply, worsted, heavy worsted, aran, chunky, and super chunky. The pattern also supports varied yarn weight approaches. Crafters will require an appropriate crochet hook sized to their chosen yarn weight and polyester fiberfill or similar stuffing material for filling the completed toy.
Difficulty Level
Duke the Dog is classified as an intermediate difficulty project. While the pattern includes links to free video tutorials covering foundational amigurumi skills—such as how to read crochet patterns, chain stitches, single crochet, and stitch markers—it assumes basic crochet competency. Additional video resources are available through Shiny Happy World and a dedicated free video class for amigurumi beginners, supporting crafters in mastering the specialized techniques required for successful completion.
