Product Description

This shawl begins at one tip with 3 stitches and expands along one edge to create a triangle. Increases are made on RS rows only at the top neck edge. A half linen stitch pattern is used for the majority of the shawl, which creates a beautiful woven look to the fabric, while a cabled panel bounded by a trellis of lace stitches is worked at one edge. The cables meander organically across the fabric within the panel, flip over each other, discontinue, and re-emerge.

Landform Observations Knitted Shawl by Mary-Anne Mace

What is Being Made

Landform Observations is an intermediate-level knitted shawl designed by Mary-Anne Mace. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a generous triangular shawl with dimensions of approximately 177 cm across the top edge, 125 cm along the left side edge, and 141 cm along the right side edge (70 inches by 49 inches by 56 inches). The asymmetrical sizing and generous proportions make this shawl suitable for layering and everyday wear.

Knitting Techniques and Stitch Construction

The Landform Observations shawl employs a combination of knitting techniques to create visual interest and textural variation. The pattern features two distinct stitch sections that work together to form the finished design:

  • Half Linen Stitch: This stitch creates a compressed, dense fabric with a distinctive texture. The half linen stitch section measures 7¾ knot stitches per 10 cm of vertical fabric after blocking, indicating a relatively tight gauge that produces a structured, durable fabric.
  • Cable Section: The pattern incorporates cable stitches that contrast with the linen stitch areas. The cable section has a different gauge than the linen stitch, with less vertical compression, creating visual and textural contrast throughout the shawl.

Yarn and Needle Requirements

The pattern recommends 4 mm (US 6) circular needles for construction, though the designer notes that needle size selection should be adjusted based on personal preference for fabric appearance. The shawl requires approximately 1000 metres of yarn, including a 10% allowance for finishing.

The original shawl pictured in the pattern was knitted using Boho Chic Fiber Co, Chic yarn, a premium blend containing 80% wool, 10% cashmere, and 10% nylon. This yarn is available at 452 metres per 113 grams (495 yards per 4 ounces), equivalent to 400 metres per 100 grams or 437 yards per 100 grams. The designer used a discontinued yarn from her personal stash that she over-dyed to coordinate with her wardrobe, though the Boho Chic Fiber Co yarn provides an excellent alternative for recreating this design.

Difficulty Level and Suitability

Classified as an intermediate-level pattern, Landform Observations is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are comfortable working with cable stitches and managing gauge variations across different stitch patterns. The pattern requires attention to the different gauges between the linen stitch and cable sections to ensure proper shaping and finished dimensions.
