Product Description

It's never quite so obvious that the United States is a young country when you run smack up against a market that's been in more or less the same place for 2000 years, and is still going strong. Or a wall built by the Romans. Couple that with brand new modern architecture, and you get a cityscape that runs the gamut from ancient to uniquely new.

This hat was inspired by the London Eye, one of the more recent additions to the London skyline, and one that can be seen for miles. With just enough slouchiness for style and a striking reverse stockinette background, twisted knit stitch columns run up the body of the hat, getting closer and closer to each other as you reach the crown, just like the spokes on the Eye. Pattern includes charted stitch pattern only. Sample shown was knit in The Uncommon Thread BFL Light DK.

Skills needed: casting on, knitting in the round, knitting, purling, twisted stitches, lace knitting. Gauge: 24 sts/32 rows over 4 in/10 cm in reverse stockinette.

London Slouch Knit Hat by Rachel Brown

What Is Being Made

The London Slouch is a knitted hat designed by Rachel Brown, inspired by the iconic London Eye observation wheel. This is an advanced-level knitting project that creates a slouchy-style hat, a relaxed silhouette that sits loosely on the head rather than fitting snugly. The design captures the aesthetic appeal of modern London architecture while delivering a practical, wearable accessory.

Knitting Techniques Used

As an advanced knitting project, the London Slouch employs sophisticated shaping and construction techniques. The slouchy fit requires strategic increases and decreases to create the characteristic relaxed drape while maintaining structural integrity. Advanced knitters will work with techniques that shape the crown and body of the hat to achieve the intended silhouette, demonstrating control over garment architecture and three-dimensional shaping in the round.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

While specific stitch details are referenced in the pattern, the construction utilizes knitting stitches appropriate to DK weight yarn and the advanced skill level required. The pattern guides knitters through the essential stitches needed to complete the slouch hat, with the complexity reflecting the advanced difficulty rating.

Yarn and Materials

The London Slouch is designed to be worked in DK weight yarn, a medium-light yarn weight that creates fabric with excellent stitch definition and drape. DK weight is ideal for hats as it produces a fabric that is neither too thick nor too thin, allowing for comfortable wear across seasons. Knitters will need appropriate needles sized for DK yarn, typically in the US 4-6 range, depending on individual gauge and the specific yarn chosen.

Design Inspiration

Designer Rachel Brown drew inspiration from London's unique blend of historical and contemporary architecture, particularly the London Eye. The hat reflects the designer's appreciation for urban landscapes that combine ancient heritage with modern innovation, translating that architectural inspiration into a wearable knit design.
