Product Description

Each Makeup Remover Pad measures approximately 2.5" across and requires approximately 6-7 yards of worsted weight cotton yarn. I use DPNs but a circular needle and magic loop method will work as well. Gauge is not critical with this pattern.

Makeup Remover Pads by Andrea Delahunty

Project Overview

These knitted makeup remover pads are practical, eco-friendly accessories designed for gentle facial cleansing. Each pad is handcrafted using fundamental knitting techniques, making this an ideal beginner-friendly project. The finished pads are soft, reusable, and washable, offering a sustainable alternative to disposable makeup removal products.

What Is Being Made

The project creates individual circular makeup remover pads constructed entirely through knitting. Each pad begins as a flat cast-on that is joined in the round and progressively decreased to form a compact, disc-like shape. The finished pads are small enough to hold comfortably in the hand while being substantial enough to effectively remove makeup and cleanse the face.

Craft and Techniques

This project uses knitting as the primary craft method. The construction technique involves working in the round using double-pointed needles, which allows the pad to be shaped without seaming. The pattern employs a systematic decrease method to transform a flat circular piece into a finished pad, demonstrating how strategic stitch reductions create shaping and structure in knitted items.

Stitches Used

  • Cast on: The foundation technique used to create the initial 30 stitches on the needles
  • Knit (k): The fundamental stitch that creates the primary fabric texture
  • Purl (p): The reverse stitch used in alternating rows to add visual texture and interest to the pad surface
  • Knit two together (k2tog): A decrease stitch that combines two stitches into one, strategically used across multiple rows to gradually reduce stitch count and shape the pad
  • Bind off: The finishing technique that secures the final stitches and prevents unraveling

Materials and Tools

Each pad requires 6 meters (6.6 yards) of worsted weight yarn in 100% cotton, a fiber choice that provides natural absorbency ideal for makeup removal and facial care. The project uses 4.5 mm/US 7 double-pointed needles (DPN) to work the stitches in the round. Additional supplies include a stitch or round marker to track the beginning of each round, and a tapestry needle for weaving in the yarn ends after binding off.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as beginner difficulty, making it accessible to knitters new to the craft. The stitch vocabulary is minimal, requiring only basic knit and purl stitches plus simple decreases. Working in the round with double-pointed needles introduces a foundational technique without overwhelming complexity.

Care Instructions

The finished pads should be hand washed with mild soap to maintain the integrity of the cotton fiber and preserve the pad's softness. After washing, lay the pads flat to dry completely. This gentle care approach ensures the pads remain durable and effective for repeated use.
