Product Description

The fairy Melusina (or Melusine) falls in love with a mortal and agrees to marry him on one condition: he must never see her on Saturday, when she takes her bath. Enchanted by her beauty, he agrees, but eventually breaks his promise and spies on her at her bath. He discovers that from the waist down, she is a fish, a serpent, or a dragon. When Melusina learns that he has broken his promise, she vanishes.

The Melusina Scarf is based on Elizabeth Zimmerman’s Pi shawl construction, which begins at the center of a circle and works outward in concentric rings.

Melusina Scarf by Kristy Howell

Project Overview

The Melusina Scarf is an enchanting knitted accessory inspired by the legendary fairy tale of Melusina, a mythical figure who transforms into a fish or serpent. This intermediate-level knitting project combines storytelling with elegant construction, creating a wearable piece that captures the magical essence of the folklore. The scarf is designed as a downloadable PDF pattern suitable for knitters seeking a moderately challenging project with beautiful results.

Construction Technique

This scarf employs Elizabeth Zimmerman's Pi shawl construction method, a distinctive approach that begins at the center of a circle and works outward in concentric rings. This technique creates a geometric, mathematically-inspired design that expands evenly from the center point, resulting in a balanced and symmetrical finished piece. The Pi shawl method is prized in the knitting community for producing elegant, flowing garments with a professional appearance.

Finished Dimensions

The completed Melusina Scarf measures 10 inches [25 cm] deep and 80 inches [203 cm] around the bottom edge, making it a substantial accessory suitable for layering or draping around the shoulders and neck.

Stitches and Stitch Details

The pattern utilizes stitch work appropriate to the Pi shawl construction method, with a gauge of 14 stitches and 24 rows per 4 inches [10 cm] in pattern after blocking. The specific stitch patterns are detailed within the PDF instructions and create the intricate texture characteristic of this construction style.

Materials Required

  • Yarn: 300 yards [274 meters] of sport-weight yarn in a merino/tencel blend or similar wool blend. The recommended yarn composition is 50% superwash merino and 50% tencel, worsted-spun 2-ply with 15 wraps per inch and 1280 yards per pound.
  • Needles: US 7 [4.5mm] circular needles, 32 inches [80 cm] in length
  • Notions: Tapestry needle for darning in ends and 2 stitch markers to track pattern repeats

Yarn Weight and Fiber Content

The Melusina Scarf calls for sport-weight yarn, a lightweight option that creates delicate, refined fabric. The specified merino and tencel blend offers excellent drape, breathability, and a luxurious feel against the skin. The superwash merino component provides durability and easy care, while the tencel adds a subtle sheen and smooth texture. This fiber combination is ideal for creating the flowing, ethereal quality appropriate to the scarf's fairy tale inspiration.

Skill Level

Rated as an intermediate difficulty project, the Melusina Scarf is suitable for knitters who have mastered basic techniques and are ready to explore more advanced construction methods. Familiarity with circular needle work, reading pattern charts, and understanding shaping techniques will enhance the knitting experience.
