What is Being Made

The Mila Cowl is a generously sized knitted neck warmer designed to provide substantial warmth during winter months. With a circumference of 95 cm (37.5 inches) and a height of 22 cm (8.5 inches), this cowl is intentionally oversized to allow for double-layered wearing, which creates an effective barrier against cold air. The extra length makes it versatile for styling and provides enhanced insulation for extended outdoor wear.

Techniques and Construction

This cowl is constructed using circular knitting on a 80 cm (32 inch) circular needle, which allows for seamless in-the-round construction. The pattern features a distinctive reversible zig-zag textured pattern as the primary design element, creating visual interest and dimensional texture on both sides of the fabric. The reversible nature of this stitch pattern means the cowl looks attractive from either direction, making it practical for versatile wear.

The design incorporates ribbed edgings in a contrast color, which frame the main textured section and add a pop of color to brighten the appearance during darker winter months. The contrast color ribbing creates a polished, finished look while the main color showcases the zig-zag texture pattern.

Materials and Specifications

• Contrast color: 2 balls of DK weight yarn (approximately 145 meters)

The sample was created using Schulana Filana yarn (50g = 125 meters per ball), with color 658 for the main color and color 681 for the contrast color. Additional materials needed include one stitch marker for round tracking and a tapestry needle for finishing.

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern specifies a gauge of 25 stitches and 34 rounds over 10 cm (4 inches) when worked in stockinette stitch. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the intended finished dimensions. Needle size may be adjusted as needed to reach the specified gauge with your chosen yarn.
