Product Description

So everyone has loved this pattern, it was about the 4th thing I made on the x loom before anyone knew about it. Which means it wasn't filmed, I had lots of notes. I wrote it down and am only asking a dollar due to the fact I don't have video for it. It uses basic techniques for the x loom which means you should be able to follow the written, and if you have questions always shoot me a message. It fits a 2 to 4 toddler. I used the largest 160 peg 3/8" gauge universal x loom. I used about 600 yards of a chinese brand of a silk, wool, cashmere. You need a dk weight or a sports weight yarn will do too. I will say this is an intermediate pattern. You will use wedge increasing and decreasing. You will be sewing up panels and a single seam on the hood. You will also be doing a front edge in seed stitch and joining as you go similar to 10 stitch blanket techniques. So have fun and enjoy the pattern and if you have question again please shoot me a message.

Red Riding Hood Cape X Loom by Scarlett Royale

Project Overview

The Red Riding Hood Cape X Loom is a knitted cape project designed by Scarlett Royale for intermediate-level crafters. This downloadable PDF pattern provides comprehensive instructions for creating a classic cape using an X loom, a specialized loom tool that enables efficient panel construction and shaping techniques. The project combines traditional loom knitting with modern video tutorial support to guide makers through each stage of the build.

What Is Being Made

This pattern creates a Red Riding Hood-inspired cape—a draped garment piece ideal for cosplay, costume wear, or decorative purposes. The cape is constructed using panel-based construction on an X loom, allowing for structured shaping and professional finishing. The design emphasizes the classic silhouette associated with the Red Riding Hood character, making it suitable for themed events, theatrical productions, or creative handmade costuming.

Loom and Tools Required

  • Large 3/8" gauge universal X loom — the primary tool for this project, sized to accommodate the cape's panel dimensions
  • Looming hook — used to manipulate stitches on the loom pegs during construction
  • Stitch markers — essential for tracking pattern repeats and shaping sections
  • Crafters needle — for weaving in yarn ends and finishing seams

Yarn Specifications

The pattern calls for 600 yards of sport to DK weight yarn. DK (double knit) weight yarn is a versatile mid-weight fiber that creates fabric with excellent drape—ideal for cape construction where fluid movement and graceful lines are desired. The yardage allows sufficient material for the full cape while maintaining the intended gauge and finished dimensions. Sport weight yarn sits at the lighter end of this range and can be substituted for a more delicate drape, while DK weight provides slightly more body and structure.

Techniques and Stitches Used

This intermediate project employs specialized X loom techniques that differ from traditional hand knitting. The pattern features two primary custom techniques:

  • Wedge Decrease (WD) — a shaping method used to reduce stitches and create tapered sections. The technique involves moving the wedge down one notch to the next set of pegs, shifting the final set of stitches to the wedge pegs on each side, then knitting the two stitches together on the wedge pegs. This creates gradual, controlled decreases essential for cape shaping.
  • Wedge Increase (WI) — a multi-step increase technique that expands the stitch count strategically. The process begins with twin knitting the first wedge peg and moving the created stitch to the previous peg, followed by knitting both wedge pegs. The crafter then twin knits the adjacent peg, moves that stitch to the second wedge peg, and knits the peg beside it. Finally, the wedge moves up one set of pegs and the extra loop is repositioned to an empty peg beside the wedge. This technique builds volume and shaping into the cape structure.
  • Seed Stitch edge — a textured edging technique that creates visual interest and a finished appearance along the cape perimeter. Seed stitch produces an alternating knit-purl texture that prevents rolling and adds decorative detail.

Pattern Format and Support

The downloadable PDF includes detailed written instructions complemented by video tutorials covering key sections. Video resources address the main panel construction, seed stitch edge technique, and fundamental X loom methods, providing visual guidance for intermediate crafters new to loom knitting. This multi-format approach accommodates different learning styles and helps ensure successful project completion.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate, this project requires prior experience with basic knitting or loom techniques. Crafters should be comfortable with fundamental stitching and ready to master the specialized wedge increase and decrease methods unique to X loom construction. The video tutorials support skill development in these advanced techniques.
