When I was a kid, my grandparents lived in Grand Junction, CO and had a large acreage full of fruit trees. One summer, a pair of peacocks moved in, and they never left. I nicknamed them King and Queenie, and they would wander around the yard and perch on the roof.
I remember thinking that King was pretty when he had his tail up in his classic tough-guy display, but that he was most beautiful when he was strutting along, his tail gently floating behind him, swaying in time. I always marveled at how his long feathers always fell perfectly back into place after his dance. In this spirit, I chose not to make a peacock with its tail in the air, but rather one with its tail folded into that soft royal train.
