Product Description

Scrappy Squares Poncho was a pattern I came up with during the COVID-19 lockdown as a way to create something only using the supplies I had on hand.

This pattern is done using two different style squares. A traditional open granny square and a closed square. I used these two different styles because I tend to get too warm when I wear sweater-like garments. I wanted it to be more open and airy, so I put the granny square in there. I fell in love with the way it looked. I finished the neckline with the crab stitch and the bottom with a lovely bit of lace.

Thorough instructions are included for each square style, how to achieve a similar look, and how to lay out your squares and assemble the poncho. I sincerely hope you enjoy busting through your stash and creating a lovely Fall piece. Or use a lighter yarn and make a soft, flowing Summer cover. No matter how you do it, make sure you have fun! :)

What Is Being Made

The Scrappy Squares Poncho is a beginner-friendly crochet cape-style garment designed by Elizabeth Mareno of Bizzy Crochet. This poncho features a relaxed, versatile silhouette constructed from individual granny squares assembled together. The finished poncho measures 35 inches side to side and 26 inches from neck to bottom, making it an accessible layering piece suitable for various body sizes. The design allows for customization by adjusting the number of squares used in construction.

Crochet Techniques and Construction

This pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques appropriate for beginners learning garment construction. The poncho is built using the granny square method, a classic modular approach where individual motifs are crocheted separately and then joined together. This technique offers several advantages: it allows crafters to work on portable, manageable pieces, makes it easy to incorporate scrap yarn, and provides natural stopping points throughout the project.

The assembly process uses a large eye needle to seam the completed squares together, creating the finished poncho shape. The modular construction means that the overall dimensions can be easily adjusted by simply adding or subtracting the number of squares in the design, making this pattern highly adaptable to different preferences and yarn availability.

Stitches Used

The Scrappy Squares Poncho utilizes essential crochet stitches that form the foundation of most crochet projects:

  • Chain stitch (ch) – creates the foundation and increases within rounds
  • Single crochet (sc) – a fundamental short stitch (equivalent to UK double crochet)
  • Double crochet (dc) – a taller stitch that creates fabric drape and is used throughout the granny squares (equivalent to UK treble)
  • Slip stitch (sl st) – used to join rounds and create the picot detail
  • Picot – a decorative element created by chaining 3 stitches and slipping into the first chain, adding textural interest to the finished piece

Materials and Tools

The Scrappy Squares Poncho calls for Aran weight yarn, specifically #4 Worsted Weight Yarn. The pattern was tested using Hobby Lobby I Love This Yarn in an Off White neutral color, requiring 2 full skeins for the main body of the poncho. The beauty of this design lies in its use of scrap yarn for the individual squares – crafters can incorporate small bits of leftover yarn in various colors to create a scrappy, multicolored aesthetic. For consistent results, the designer recommends ensuring that all scrap yarn is the same weight as the main yarn, as variations in yarn weight will noticeably affect the appearance and uniformity of the finished squares.

Construction requires a #7/4.5mm crochet hook, appropriately sized for Aran weight yarn, and a large eye needle for assembling the squares during the finishing stage. This straightforward material list makes the project accessible and budget-friendly, particularly for crafters with existing yarn stashes.

Pattern Overview

The pattern is presented as a downloadable PDF and includes detailed instructions for constructing the granny squares that form the foundation of the poncho. The design requires making 28 individual granny squares, each begun with a magic ring and built in rounds using the chain, double crochet, and chain-space construction typical of traditional granny square patterns. Once all squares are completed, they are assembled using the large eye needle to create the finished poncho garment.
