Product Description
Ho-ho-ho, are you getting ready for Christmas? Here is a new pattern for you. It combines our love for Santa and Scandinavian gnomes and this naughty Santa Gnome has a secret!
This is an easy pattern suitable for beginners. It requires very basic felting skills. However an alternative to felting is provided in the pattern.
It’s designed to hold 500cl gin bottle. The pattern also provides a guide on how to adjust the finished item to suit your needs (bigger or smaller bottle)
The pattern is designed using Sheepjes Colour Crafter DK yarn. You can use any DK yarn, however some yarn is thicker/thinner than others. Go for yarn with 300 meters in 100g.
You will also need 2-3 meters of white chenille yarn. Some craft stores sell small quantities. James C Brett Flutterby is my favourite. If you don’t have/don’t want to buy chenille yarn you can use crab stitch to finish off mittens and the hat
Secret Santa Gnome Crochet Pattern
What Is Being Made
The Secret Santa Gnome is a decorative crochet project designed to fit over a 500ml gin bottle, making it an ideal festive gift topper or holiday decoration. This charming gnome features a classic gnome silhouette with a pointed hat, beard, and mittens, transforming an ordinary bottle into a whimsical seasonal accessory. The pattern includes instructions for scaling the design to fit larger or smaller bottles, allowing crafters to customize the finished piece to their specific needs.
Difficulty Level and Suitability
Rated as Easy and Beginner-friendly, this pattern is accessible to crocheters who are new to the craft. While the pattern itself is not a comprehensive crochet tutorial, it assumes basic familiarity with fundamental crochet techniques and stitches. The straightforward construction and simple shaping make it an excellent project for beginners looking to build confidence with their crochet skills.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches Used
The Secret Santa Gnome employs essential crochet techniques suitable for beginner-level projects. The pattern utilizes basic crochet stitches to construct the gnome's body, hat, and other components. For finishing details, crafters have two options: the pattern calls for either crab stitch to complete the mittens and hat edges, or alternatively, the use of chenille yarn for a textured, finished appearance. The crab stitch is a reverse single crochet technique that creates a decorative, rope-like border, while the chenille yarn option provides a plush, dimensional finish without requiring additional stitching techniques.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
This project requires DK weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that works up quickly and provides good stitch definition for small decorative projects. The color palette includes:
- Red yarn (approximately 50-60g) for the main gnome body and hat
- White yarn (approximately 15-20g) for the beard and accent details
- Neutral/skin tone yarn (approximately 10-15g) for the gnome's nose
- White chenille yarn (2-3 meters) for embellishing the mittens and hat trim, with James C Brett Flutterby noted as a recommended option
Total yarn requirement is approximately 100g with a yardage of around 300m. Crafters who prefer not to purchase chenille yarn can substitute this material by using the crab stitch technique instead, making the pattern adaptable to available supplies.
