What is Being Made

Shoreham Beach is a modular knitted shawl designed by Linda Brown for Tabatha Thomas Studio. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a rectangular shawl measuring 187 x 44.5 cm (73½ x 17½ in) when lightly blocked. The design draws inspiration from ocean waves crashing onto a beach, with the yarn's color transition from cream to darkest blue representing the movement of waves and sea foam.

Construction Technique

Shoreham Beach employs a modular knitting construction method where the shawl is built in segments that are progressively joined together. Each segment is created by picking up stitches from the segments below, allowing the shawl to grow organically. The pattern follows a structured progression where each segment row contains one segment longer than the previous segment row, creating the characteristic undulating wave-like appearance along the top edge.

Stitches and Finishing

The shawl is finished with a row of garter stitch across the top of the final segment row. This finishing technique serves a dual purpose: it neatens the top edge while simultaneously preserving the undulating shape created by the modular segments, ensuring the wave-like aesthetic runs continuously along the top of the completed shawl.

Yarn and Materials

• Yarn: 1 x 200g / 660 metres (722 yards) ball of Bergere de France Unic DK in 100% Merino Wool, colorway Ecru/Bouteille (10103)
• Needles: 5mm circular needles in three sizes—40cm (16 in) or 60cm (24 in) for knitting segments, and 100cm (40 in) for the edging
• Additional Materials: Tapestry needle for finishing
• Yarn Weight: DK (Double Knitting)
