Product Description
Spring It On! is a joyous asymmetrical triangle-shaped shawl that plays with colors, textures, and stitch patterns. Pick three colors that go well together and have a good amount of contrast between them.
There are a few points in the pattern where you can choose your own adventure. Easy and mindless? Choose Option 1. Something a little more interesting? Choose Option 2. At the end of the pattern you’ll have a completely unique shawl with your colors and choices.
Some stitch patterns come only as row-by-row written instructions, some are also charted. The pattern is written with both metric and US terminology.
Gauge: 23 sts x 34 rows = 4" in stockinette, blocked.
This shawl was originally the Spring 2019 mystery knitalong from talvi knits. Share your project on Instagram with the hashtags #springitonmkal and #talviknits.
Spring It On! Asymmetrical Triangle Shawl by Susanna Winter
What Is Being Made
Spring It On! is a joyous asymmetrical triangle shawl designed by Susanna Winter. This knitted shawl celebrates color play and textural variety through carefully selected stitch patterns and a three-color construction. The design encourages creative decision-making, allowing knitters to personalize their finished piece through pattern choices that affect both the visual interest and complexity of the final shawl.
Design Features and Color Work
The shawl is constructed using three coordinating colors that work together with good contrast. Knitters select colors intentionally to create visual impact through the interplay of hues and textures. The asymmetrical triangle shape creates a dynamic silhouette suitable for various styling options.
Customization Options
Spring It On! incorporates multiple decision points throughout the pattern, allowing knitters to choose their own adventure:
- Option 1: Easy and mindless stitch patterns for a more meditative knitting experience
- Option 2: More interesting and complex stitch patterns for enhanced visual texture and engagement
These choices ensure that each finished shawl is completely unique, reflecting the individual preferences and skill preferences of the maker.
Stitches and Techniques
The pattern employs multiple stitch patterns that vary in complexity. Some stitch patterns are provided as row-by-row written instructions only, while others include charted representations for visual reference. This combination of written and charted instructions accommodates different learning styles and preferences. The intermediate difficulty level indicates that knitters should be comfortable with various stitch types and pattern reading before beginning this project.
Pattern Format and Instructions
The pattern is written with both metric and US terminology, making it accessible to international knitters. Instructions are presented in both written row-by-row format and charted format depending on the specific stitch pattern section, providing flexibility in how knitters prefer to follow directions.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
Yarn: Samelin Dyeworks Silky Singles, a luxury blend of 70% superwash merino and 30% silk. This yarn weight is classified as 4-ply, offering a refined drape and subtle sheen. Each color requires 1 skein, with yardage of 400 meters per 100 grams (approximately 437 yards per 3.53 ounces). The superwash merino provides easy care, while the silk content adds lustrous beauty and fluid drape characteristic of shawl knitting.
Notions and Tools: The project requires 2 stitch markers for construction and a darning needle for finishing and weaving in ends.
Gauge
The pattern is worked to a gauge of 24 stitches by 36 rows over 10 centimeters (4 inches) in stockinette stitch. Achieving proper gauge is essential for the shawl to reach its intended finished dimensions and drape characteristics.
Skill Level
Classified as intermediate difficulty, Spring It On! is suitable for knitters who have progressed beyond basic techniques and are comfortable reading patterns, managing multiple stitch types, and interpreting both written and charted instructions. The customizable difficulty options within the pattern allow intermediate knitters to adjust the challenge level to their preference.
