Product Description
Tendril Cowl: Inspired by the way my wisteria plant tendrils out and wraps itself around anything that it can reach, the Tendril cowl has a raised textural feature that has the illusion of a plant wrapping itself around and wandering up the sides of your beanie. I had the illusion of a cable but it is not a complicated design and doesn’t require a cable needle.

What is Being Made
The Tendril Cowl is a textured neck warmer designed by Mel Harrison, inspired by the natural growth patterns of wisteria plant tendrils. This cowl features a raised textural design that creates the visual illusion of vines wrapping around and wandering up the sides of the piece. Despite its decorative appearance, the design is accessible to intermediate knitters and does not require advanced techniques or specialized equipment.
Design Inspiration and Construction
The cowl's aesthetic draws from the organic way wisteria plants tendril outward and wrap themselves around surrounding structures. The designer has translated this natural inspiration into a knitted textile by incorporating a faux cable effect that mimics the appearance of wrapped vines without the complexity typically associated with traditional cable knitting.
Techniques and Stitches Used
The Tendril Cowl employs a faux cable technique that creates a raised textural feature without requiring a cable needle. This approach simplifies the construction process while maintaining visual interest. The pattern uses a repeating body section that can be worked multiple times to adjust the height of the finished cowl according to maker preference. Cast-on stitches are worked in multiples of 8, allowing for customization of the cowl's width.
Yarn and Materials
This pattern is written for DK weight yarn (also referred to as 8ply). The sample was knitted using Mahogany Turtle merino yarn in the Spring colorway, requiring approximately 200 grams of yarn for the finished piece.
Finished Dimensions
The cowl created with the specified yarn and yardage measures approximately 25 centimeters wide by 19 centimeters in height.
Customization Options
- Adjust width by increasing cast-on stitches in multiples of 8
- Increase height by working additional repeats of the body section
- Substitute alternative DK weight yarns by weighing your skein to confirm yardage requirements
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to explore textured stitch patterns and faux cable techniques.
