What Is Being Made

The February Hat is a knitted hat designed as a downloadable PDF pattern. This intermediate-level project creates a finished hat with a circumference of 45 cm (17.5 inches) and a height of 21 cm (8.5 inches) when unstretched. The design is suitable for knitters with some experience who are ready to work with small circumference knitting techniques and decorative stitch elements.

Knitting Techniques Used

This pattern employs several essential knitting techniques for hat construction. The hat is worked in the round using either double pointed needles or circular needles, depending on the knitter's preferred method for small circumference knitting. The pattern incorporates wrapping techniques, specifically the wrap2 method, which involves wrapping yarn around stitches to create textured or decorative elements. Decreasing techniques are used to shape the crown of the hat, utilizing both k2tog (knit 2 together) and ssk (slip slip knit) decreases to achieve a proper fit and finished appearance.

Stitches and Stitch Details

The February Hat features a foundation of Stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric base. The pattern incorporates the following specialized stitches and techniques:

  • Knit (k) – the primary stitch forming the Stockinette base
  • Purl (p) – used selectively within the pattern
  • Wrap2 – wrapping yarn around the next 2 stitches twice, creating decorative wrapped stitch elements
  • K2tog (knit 2 together) – a right-leaning decrease used for shaping
  • SSK (slip slip knit) – a left-leaning decrease used for balanced shaping
  • Slip stitches (slip purlwise) – used in the wrapping technique and for moving stitches without working them

The pattern uses stitch markers to track pattern repeats and round beginnings, with 3 stitch markers required for construction.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The February Hat is designed to be knitted with DK (light worsted) weight yarn, requiring approximately 50 grams or 120 meters (135 yards) of yarn. This yarn weight is ideal for creating a hat with good drape and structure while remaining lightweight enough for comfortable wear.

The pattern calls for US 5 / 3.75 mm double pointed needles or circular needles sized to accommodate small circumference knitting in the round. Additional tools include 3 stitch markers for tracking pattern sections and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and finishing.

Gauge and Finished Measurements

The pattern is worked at a gauge of 20 stitches and 28 rows over 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 inches) in Stockinette stitch. Achieving this gauge is essential for the hat to fit properly at the specified finished measurements of 45 cm (17.5 inches) circumference and 21 cm (8.5 inches) tall on an unstretched hat. Knitters should always swatch and measure gauge before beginning the project to ensure proper fit.
