Techniques Knitting in the round, increasing, decreasing, stranded colorwork
These are two patterns, one is for a cowl, one is for a hat. Both are worked in the round and using the Fair-Isle knitting technique. Make sure there this enough contrast between your two shades! Take a black and white photo of them to see if their colour value is different enough for the pattern to show clearly.

WYNN Hat and Cowl by Nikolett Corley Designs
Project Overview
The WYNN Hat and Cowl is a versatile two-in-one knitting pattern designed by Nikolett Corley Designs that allows crafters to create both a coordinating hat and cowl using the same yarn and techniques. This intermediate-level knitting project combines modern colorwork with classic construction methods, making it suitable for knitters with some experience who are ready to explore two-color designs.
What Is Being Made
This pattern includes instructions for creating two separate garments: a cowl (also referred to as a neckwarmer) and a matching hat. Both pieces are designed to work together as a coordinated set, allowing knitters to customize their finished projects by choosing which colorways to feature in each garment.
Cowl Specifications
The cowl is knit seamlessly in the round using sport-weight yarn. The finished cowl measures 23 inches (60 centimeters) in circumference and 12.5 inches (32 centimeters) in height, though the height is customizable to suit individual preferences. The construction is worked on the right side only, creating a single-piece, seamless garment that pulls over the head for easy wearing.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
Both the hat and cowl are constructed using circular knitting needles to create seamless, tubular garments worked in the round. This technique eliminates the need for seaming and creates a polished, professional finish. The patterns employ two-color knitting, allowing crafters to incorporate contrasting or complementary colorways into their designs. The use of stitch markers helps maintain pattern accuracy and makes it easy to track increases, decreases, and color changes throughout the project.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette Stitch – The primary stitch used in this pattern, worked in the round to create a smooth, classic fabric
- Corrugated Ribbing – A two-color ribbed stitch technique that creates a textured, elastic edge ideal for cuffs and openings
Yarn and Materials
The WYNN pattern is designed to work with Malabrigo Arroyo yarn in sport weight. The recommended colorways are 063 Natural and Pocion, though knitters can substitute other sport-weight yarns with similar yardage and fiber content. Approximately 1/2 hank of each color is required, totaling 3.50 ounces (100 grams) with 335 yards (305 meters) of yardage.
The yarn fiber is pure superwash merino wool, which provides excellent elasticity, breathability, and easy care. The superwash treatment allows the finished garments to be machine washed, making them practical for regular wear.
Needles and Notions
- US 4 / 3.5mm circular knitting needles – Used for ribbed sections and edges
- US 6 / 4mm circular knitting needles – Used for the main body of the garments in stockinette stitch
- Stitch markers – Essential for tracking pattern repeats and construction points
- Tapestry needle – Used for weaving in yarn ends and finishing
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 25 stitches by 26 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) when working stockinette stitch with US 6 / 4mm needles. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for obtaining the intended finished dimensions and ensuring proper fit. Knitters should always swatch before beginning the project to verify their personal gauge.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it appropriate for knitters who have mastered basic techniques such as casting on, knit and purl stitches, increasing and decreasing, and working in the round. The two-color corrugated ribbing technique and color changes throughout the pattern provide an opportunity to expand skills while remaining achievable for experienced beginners.
