Product Description

My father, an avid photographer and passionate collector of National Geographic, had a whole collection of magazines where the photos of the Aurora Borealis graced the horizon, filling the sky with beautiful colours that had to be seen to be believed. As a child, i fell in love with the northern lights, and had pictures all over my room. Many years later, while on one of my first excursions for my career to Utikuma Alberta, I remember sitting outside enjoying the night air with my colleagues, when suddenly the sky filled with beautiful green/blue rays of light. The days are long in northern Alberta, and the sky held a grey tinge as a canvas. That was my first time experiencing the northern lights outside of a book and the moment I knew my journey had truly begun. The Aurora Horizon Cardigan, commemorates that night, as a cozy cardigan to cuddle into while sitting back and enjoying the rays of blue/green, filling the sky.

The model is wearing size M, with 7" positive ease.

Aurora Horizon Cardigan by Samantha MacKay Designs

What Is Being Made

The Aurora Horizon Cardigan is a knitted cardigan design inspired by the natural beauty of Canada's northern lights. This intermediate-level garment combines colorwork elements with classic cardigan construction, creating a wearable piece that captures the visual essence of the aurora borealis phenomenon. The design draws inspiration from the rippling, shimmering qualities of the northern lights, translating those natural color transitions into a knitted fabric.

Knitting Techniques

This pattern employs intermediate knitting techniques suitable for crafters with foundational skills who are ready to expand their abilities. The construction likely incorporates colorwork methods to achieve the aurora-inspired visual effects, requiring the knitter to manage multiple colors throughout the project. Cardigan construction techniques are used, including shaping for proper fit, button bands, and finishing details typical of wearable garments.

Stitches Used

While specific stitch details are not fully outlined in the available pattern excerpt, the intermediate difficulty level suggests the use of standard knitting stitches combined with colorwork techniques. Knitters should expect to work with fundamental stitches enhanced by color changes to create the aurora-inspired design elements throughout the cardigan body and sleeves.

Materials

The Aurora Horizon Cardigan is designed to be worked in worsted weight yarn, making it an accessible project for many knitters as this is a commonly available yarn weight. The pattern requires appropriate knitting needles sized for worsted weight yarn, as specified in the downloadable PDF instructions.

Pattern Format

This design is available as a downloadable PDF pattern from Samantha MacKay Designs, an independent designer. Pattern support and inquiries can be directed to the designer for assistance during the knitting process.
