Product Description

These pretty fingerless mittens are a great introduction to fairisle colourwork; knitted in the round, the patterned sections consist of nothing more complicated than K2 in shade A, followed by K2 in shade B.

The pattern instructions cleverly adjust the number of stitches, gently tapering them towards the finger cast-off, so that the mitts fit perfectly and the direction of the patterned stripes changes. The number of rows in the bands of patterns combined with the direction changes make for an impressive array of traditional motifs.

Offered in two versions (with or without thumbs), these wrist warmers do not skimp on length, so they are lovely and cosy and can be scrunched up or down according to the weather conditions and how you prefer to wear them.

I used 2 x 25gm of the main shade and 1 x 25gm of contrast, but they could be worked from odds and ends of any 4 ply yarn to create a truly personalised project!

Bandstand Mitts by Stella Ackroyd

What is Being Made

Bandstand Mitts are fingerless knitted mittens designed by Stella Ackroyd. These mittens are crafted to fit small, medium, or large hands, making them a versatile accessory project. The fingerless design allows for hand mobility while providing warmth to the wrists and back of the hands, making them practical for activities requiring finger dexterity.

Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting project employs several key techniques. The mittens are worked in the round using double-pointed needles, which creates seamless, tubular fabric. The pattern incorporates ribbed cuffs for a fitted finish and uses a color-work technique to create a decorative pattern. The construction begins with a ribbed foundation, followed by increases to shape the hand area, and concludes with a spiral pattern created through alternating yarn colors.

Stitches Used

  • Knit (K) and Purl (P) stitches form the foundational ribbed cuff
  • Rib pattern (K1, P1) creates the elastic, fitted opening
  • Increases (inc 1, knit into front and back of next stitch) shape the hand section
  • Right spiral pattern created through a two-color fairisle technique using alternating knit stitches with two contrasting yarns
  • Decreases (dec) used to shape the mittens as needed

Materials

The Bandstand Mitts are knitted using The Border Mill North Coast 4 ply yarn in two colorways. Yarn A (Achiltibuie) requires 2 x 25gm balls for all sizes, while Yarn B (Rockpool) requires 1 x 25gm ball for all sizes. The project uses two sets of double-pointed needles: 2.75mm (US 2) needles for the ribbed cuff and 3mm (US 2.5) needles for the main pattern. The recommended tension is 34 stitches and 36 rows to 10 centimeters (4 inches) measured over the fairisle pattern using the 3mm needles.

Sizing

The pattern provides three size options: small, medium, and large, accommodating different hand sizes. Cast-on stitches range from 60 stitches for the small size to 68 stitches for the large size, with corresponding adjustments throughout the pattern to ensure proper fit across all three sizes.
