Product Description

Parks are special places which I love to explore and when moving about it's easy stay warm. If I stop to enjoy (and often photograph) a vista, my hands often get chilly. So I designed this fingerless mitt with a simple purl column to provide subtle interest for both the knitter and the mitt. The name is a nod to Glacier Lake National Park in Montana's Rocky Mountains that influenced this gorgeous colorway. It is also a nod to New York State where I live -- there's a Bowman Lake State Park in Oxford, New York!

Bowman Lake Mitts by little acorn creations

Project Overview

Bowman Lake Mitts are fingerless knitted mitts designed by Penny Shima Glanz of little acorn creations. These mitts are inspired by the natural beauty of parks and mountain vistas, specifically drawing inspiration from Glacier Lake National Park in Montana's Rocky Mountains and Bowman Lake State Park in Oxford, New York. The design is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts who need to keep their hands warm while maintaining the ability to photograph or explore natural landscapes. The fingerless construction allows for dexterity while the mitt portion provides essential warmth.

What You'll Create

This pattern produces a pair of fingerless mitts that extend partway up the forearm. The mitts feature a simple purl column detail that runs vertically, providing subtle visual interest without overwhelming the design. The fingerless style makes these mitts practical for activities requiring hand mobility, such as photography, hiking, or other outdoor pursuits where you need to use your fingers while keeping your hands and wrists warm.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

Bowman Lake Mitts are worked in the round, which creates seamless, tubular fabric ideal for fitted wearables. The pattern includes a thumb opening, requiring knitters to understand basic in-the-round construction techniques. The intermediate difficulty level indicates that knitters should be comfortable with fundamental techniques before beginning this project.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette Stitch: The primary stitch used throughout the mitt body, creating a smooth, classic knit fabric
  • Purl Stitch: Featured in a vertical column detail that provides textural contrast and visual interest to the design
  • Ribbing: Commonly used in cuff construction to create elasticity and a finished edge

Materials Required

Yarn: The pattern calls for DK weight yarn in five different size options. Yardage requirements range from 90 yards (83 meters) for the smallest size to 160 yards (147 meters) for the largest size. The pattern specifies Artyarns Cashmere Eco, which is 100% cashmere yarn with a yardage of 164 yards per 50-gram skein. One skein is sufficient for any size in this pattern. DK weight yarn is a medium-light yarn weight that knits to a refined gauge, making it suitable for fitted accessories like mitts.

Needles: The pattern requires 3.5mm/US 4 needles or the size needed to obtain the correct gauge. Knitters should choose needles appropriate for working in the round; double-pointed needles are specifically suggested for working the thumb section, though circular needles or other in-the-round methods may also be used for the main body.

Notions and Tools: Knitters will need a minimum of 2 stitch markers to track pattern repeats and construction points, and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends after completion.

Difficulty Level

Bowman Lake Mitts are rated as an intermediate knitting project. This difficulty level is appropriate for knitters who have mastered basic knit and purl stitches and are comfortable working in the round. The straightforward purl column detail and thumb construction make this an excellent intermediate project that doesn't require complex stitch patterns or advanced shaping techniques.

Design Inspiration

The mitts are named as a tribute to two significant locations: Glacier Lake National Park in Montana's Rocky Mountains, which inspired the colorway, and Bowman Lake State Park in New York, reflecting the designer's connection to both natural landmarks and her home state. This thematic naming adds personal significance to the finished project.
