Product Description
Echo Azure is a study on the interplay between variegated and solid yarns. Named after a butterfly with frosty, iridescent wings, the shawl is made of garter stitch, stripes, and shell stitches formed with knit-below stitches.
Starting from the upper right corner, the shawl is knit on the bias to create an asymmetric triangle that is both comfortable to wear and fun to work on. A shell-stitch border and a stretchy bind-off finish off the design.
This pattern is written with both metric and US terminology. Pattern instructions are provided only in written format but a step-by-step photo tutorial for knitting the shell stitch is included.
Gauge: 18 sts × 36 rows (18 garter ridges) = 10 cm / 4" in garter stitch, blocked

Echo Azure Knit Shawl by Susanna Winter
What Is Being Made
Echo Azure is an advanced-level knit shawl designed by independent designer Susanna Winter. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished shawl featuring a sophisticated construction with distinct structural sections that build visual interest and depth.
Craft and Primary Technique
This project uses knitting as its primary craft method. The shawl is constructed through traditional hand-knitting techniques, making it suitable for experienced knitters seeking a challenging and rewarding project.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
Echo Azure incorporates specialized stitch patterns to create its distinctive design:
- Shell Stitch — A decorative stitch pattern featured prominently in the shawl's construction, particularly in Section 2, creating elegant scalloped or shell-like texture
- Striped sections — Section 1 establishes a striped pattern foundation that provides visual contrast and structure
The combination of these stitch patterns creates an echo effect throughout the shawl, reflecting the design's name and contributing to its advanced difficulty rating.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
Echo Azure is designed to be worked in 4-ply yarn weight, which provides a delicate, refined fabric suitable for shawl construction. The pattern includes specific gauge requirements and finished size specifications detailed in the schematic, ensuring proper drape and proportions. Knitters will need appropriate needles matched to their chosen yarn and gauge, along with any notions specified in the pattern materials list.
