Product Description

Another of my own designs .

Designer’s Notes : I wanted to design a crochet like stitch and after some calculations and samples I came up with this pattern stitch which I really think looks cute . The stitch is made of a 12 row repeat so you can make use of stitch markers . I have used size 4.5 mm ( US 7 ) knitting needles but you can use a needle size bigger for a slightly bigger blanket . A really lovely blanket to welcome a new baby or as a gift for a baby shower .

Faux Crochet Baby Blanket by Marinda Creations

What Is Being Made

The Faux Crochet Baby Blanket is a knitted baby blanket designed to create the visual appearance of crochet work using knitting techniques. This finished blanket measures 87 cm wide by 86 cm long (34 ½ inches by 34 ¼ inches), making it an ideal size for welcoming a new baby. The blanket features a distinctive stitch pattern that mimics the texture and aesthetic of traditional crochet, offering a unique alternative for knitters who want the look of crochet without using a crochet hook.

Techniques and Stitch Construction

Designed by Marinda Ghunsawn, this pattern employs a specialized faux crochet stitch that was developed through careful calculations and sampling to achieve an authentic crochet-like appearance. The pattern is constructed using a 12-row repeat, which allows crafters to effectively use stitch markers to track their progress through the pattern. This repeat structure makes the pattern manageable and helps prevent mistakes during the knitting process. The designer notes that the stitch pattern is cute and visually appealing, successfully translating crochet aesthetics into a knitted format.

Stitches Used

The pattern utilizes specialized stitches including the Dubble Wrapped Stitch (DWS), which is a key component of creating the faux crochet effect. The blanket also incorporates stockinette stitch as a reference point for gauge measurement. These stitches work together within the 12-row repeat pattern to build the textured, crochet-like appearance throughout the blanket.

Materials and Specifications

This intermediate-level knitting project requires 920 meters (1006.1 yards) of yarn totaling 500 grams. The pattern was designed using Stylecraft Special Aran, a yarn specifically formulated for babies. Crafters will need straight knitting needles in size 4 ½ mm (US 7) and a tapestry needle for finishing. The recommended gauge is 5 ½ stitches over 6 ½ stockinette rows measuring 2.5 cm when using size 4 ½ mm knitting needles. The aran yarn weight provides good stitch definition while remaining soft and suitable for a baby blanket.

Skill Level and Project Suitability

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic techniques and are ready to explore more complex stitch patterns. The 12-row repeat structure and use of specialized stitches like the Dubble Wrapped Stitch require attention to detail and pattern reading skills, but the repetitive nature of the pattern makes it achievable for dedicated intermediate knitters.
