What Is Being Made

Guilda socks are a pair of knitted socks designed by Zsuzsanna Orthodoxou, inspired by the blue, clear, and starry sky. These socks are crafted using the top-down method and are available in three sizes to fit EU shoe sizes 36-37, 38-39, and 40-41 (UK 3.5-4, 5-5.5, and 6.5-7 / US 5.5-6, 6.5-7, and 8-8.5).

Techniques Used

The Guilda socks employ several advanced knitting techniques that create both visual interest and structural integrity:

• Turkish Cast-on: The pattern begins with a simple Turkish cast-on method to create the toe of the sock
• German Short Rows: Used to construct the heel, this technique creates a sturdy and neat heel without the need for traditional heel flaps
• Picot Bind-off: The socks are finished with this decorative bind-off method, adding a delicate, ornamental edge

Stitches Used

The stitch patterns in Guilda socks create a delicate, textured appearance throughout the design:

• Star Rib Mesh Stitch: This decorative stitch pattern is worked across the instep and then repeated across all stitches for the leg, creating the starry sky inspiration
• Stocking Stitch: Used on the sole of the sock for a smooth, durable surface
• 1x1 Twisted Rib: Applied as the finishing cuff at the top of the socks

Materials and Needles

Guilda socks are designed for 4-ply yarn weight, which provides an ideal balance of drape and durability for sock knitting. The pattern recommends circular needles in two sizes: 2 mm (US 0) and 2.25 mm (US 1), with a length of 80 cm / 32" for working the socks. The choice between needle sizes corresponds to the three available sock sizes, allowing knitters to achieve the correct gauge for their desired fit.
