What is Being Made

The Hedera Helix Sweater is a boxy, oversized pullover sweater designed by Roos Vlaskamp and published by Flax Field Designs. This intermediate-level knitting project features distinctive Brioche stitch motifs as its primary design element. The sweater is available in nine sizes, ranging from 29.5" to 61" bust circumference (75 cm to 156 cm), with generous positive ease of 8 to 18 inches built into the finished measurements. The original design is intentionally very oversized; knitters can achieve a more fitted silhouette by selecting one or more sizes smaller than their actual bust measurement.

Construction Techniques

The Hedera Helix Sweater employs a sophisticated multi-part construction method that combines circular and flat knitting techniques:

• Bottom-up construction: The sweater begins at the hem and progresses upward toward the shoulders
• Circular knitting: The body is initially worked in the round from the bottom until reaching the armhole depth
• Flat knitting: Once the armholes are reached, the front and back panels are separated and worked flat to allow for shoulder shaping and neckline shaping
• Shoulder grafting: The shoulder seams are finished using a three-needle bind off, creating a seamless join
• Sleeve construction: Sleeves are knit separately from the cuff upward and then grafted onto the body using the same three-needle bind off technique
• Blocking considerations: The brioche stitch creates a natural inverted v-shape at the bottom hem due to the inherent pull of the stitch; this can be blocked straight during finishing if a different aesthetic is preferred

Brioche stitch is the featured stitch throughout the Hedera Helix Sweater. This decorative and textured stitch creates the primary visual motifs of the design. Brioche knitting is characterized by yarn overs and knit stitches worked together, producing a distinctive ribbed, dimensional appearance. Materials
