My favorite place to set up a tent is in the shade of the hemlock trees that grow along the creek. In the early hours, the tall trees block the bright morning sunlight, as it pours over the ridge, allowing one to sleep in just a wee bit longer…lying there, peeking up at the sunlit branches, and listening to the gentle bubbling creek (okay, maybe you are just pretending to be asleep at this point)… And in the afternoon, the shade is keeping everything nice and cool.
This chunky, deeply textured hat with travelling cables and twisted slipped stitches works up quickly using bulky weight yarn. The cable stitches wind their way from the edge to the crown, like branches disappearing from view, receding into the green needles of a mighty hemlock tree, while the garter stitch sections inside the cables remind me of the tiny
Hemlock Shade Hat by OwlCat Designs
Project Overview
Hemlock Shade is an intermediate-level knitted hat designed by OwlCat Designs, inspired by the natural beauty of hemlock trees providing shade along a forest creek. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a deeply textured hat featuring travelling cables and twisted slipped stitches that work up quickly, making it an ideal project for knitters seeking to complete a finished garment in a reasonable timeframe.
Design Inspiration and Aesthetic
The hat draws its visual inspiration from hemlock tree branches and their characteristic pine cones. The cable stitches are strategically placed to wind from the edge toward the crown, mimicking the appearance of branches receding into view as they disappear among green needles. The garter stitch sections incorporated within the cable pattern elements evoke the texture of tiny pine cones, creating a cohesive natural design that celebrates forest imagery.
Knitting Techniques
This pattern employs several intermediate-level knitting techniques to achieve its distinctive appearance:
- Travelling cables: Cable stitches that move across the fabric, creating the branch-like visual effect from brim to crown
- Twisted slipped stitches: Slipped stitches worked with a twist to add textural depth and visual interest
- Garter stitch: Flat, ridged stitch sections worked between cable elements to represent pine cone texture
Materials and Yarn Weight
Hemlock Shade is designed to be worked in chunky weight yarn, specifically bulky t-weight yarn. The pattern calls for Neighborhood Fiber Co. Studio Chunky yarn. The use of chunky-weight yarn contributes to the quick project completion time while creating the deeply textured appearance characteristic of this design.
Skill Level
Rated as an intermediate difficulty pattern, Hemlock Shade is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to work with cable stitches and slipped stitch techniques. The chunky yarn weight makes stitches easier to see and manipulate compared to finer yarn weights, while the travelling cable technique provides a satisfying challenge for developing knitters.
