Hug Cowl by Sharon Mooney

What is Being Made

The Hug is a beginner-friendly cowl design created by independent designer Sharon Mooney. This downloadable knitting pattern produces a luxurious neck cowl with an unstretched circumference of 19 inches (48.3 centimeters) and a height of 10 inches (25.4 centimeters) before blocking. The cowl stretches comfortably to accommodate a circumference of 28 inches (71.1 centimeters) when worn, making it a versatile accessory suitable for various neck sizes. The design is part of Sharon Mooney's First Project Series, making it an excellent choice for knitters new to cowl construction.

Knitting Techniques Used

The Hug cowl is constructed using circular knitting techniques, which creates a seamless tubular fabric ideal for neck wear. The pattern employs a two-needle approach: a larger needle is used exclusively for casting on and binding off, while a smaller needle is used for the main body of the cowl. This technique helps establish proper tension and creates clean edges. The cowl is worked in the round on circular needles, eliminating the need for seaming. According to the pattern notes, blocking is unnecessary for this particular design, simplifying the finishing process for beginners.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch pattern featured in the Hug cowl is 2 x 2 rib stitch, worked in the round. This classic ribbed texture creates vertical columns of knit and purl stitches that alternate in groups of two, providing excellent stretch and recovery. The rib stitch is both visually appealing and functional, as it naturally hugs the neck while maintaining its shape. The gauge for this pattern is 6 stitches and 7 rounds to 1 inch on unstretched 2 x 2 rib stitch using size US 8/5mm circular knitting needles.

Materials and Tools

  • Yarn: Approximately one skein of Illimani Yarn "Amelie" (164 yards/150 meters). This luxury yarn blend contains 56% Mulberry Silk, 40% Baby Alpaca, and 4% Merino, providing a soft, lustrous, and breathable fabric. The yarn is classified as aran weight, suitable for creating drape and comfort against the skin.
  • Needles: Two pairs of 16-inch (40-centimeter) circular knitting needles—size US 10/6mm for casting on and binding off, and size US 8/5mm for working the main body of the cowl
  • Notions: One stitch marker to track the beginning of rounds, and a yarn needle or large embroidery needle for weaving in ends

Pattern Overview

The Hug cowl pattern (K606) is designed for beginner knitters and demonstrates fundamental circular knitting skills. The use of aran-weight yarn and straightforward 2 x 2 rib stitch makes this project accessible while producing a professional-looking finished garment. The pattern's simplicity, combined with the luxurious fiber content of Illimani Yarn "Amelie," creates an elegant accessory that feels as good as it looks.
