Product Description

The Ice Skating Scarf and Wrap pattern is part of the [Knitvent 2014][1] Collection** ** The Ice Skating scarf and wrap are knit in a worsted weight yarn, making either of them perfect for keeping you warm whether gliding round an ice rink or building a snowman.

There are three different stitch patterns to give an interesting look and they are all based on garter stitch so it is a very easy, relaxing knit - ideal for knitting by the fire with great friends, good conversation and a mug of hot chocolate.

The middle section is created with slipped stitches and gives a dramatic effect without having to deal with more than one colour at a time. The sides are finished with an icord edge which is also deceptively simple and hides the colour changes beautifully. It looks like a lot of knitting but the bigger needles and garter stitch means it flies off the needles - just in time for that walk in the snow!

Ice Skating Scarf and Wrap by Helen Stewart

Project Overview

The Ice Skating Scarf and Wrap is a knitted accessory design created by Helen Stewart, offering two versatile sizing options for cold-weather wear. This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for creating either a traditional scarf or a larger wrap, both designed to provide warmth during winter activities like ice skating or outdoor play. The pattern is classified as advanced difficulty, though the construction techniques are surprisingly accessible despite the sophisticated finished appearance.

What Is Being Made

This pattern includes two distinct projects:

  • Scarf version: Finished measurements of 132cm (52 inches) in length and 24cm (9.5 inches) in width
  • Wrap version: Finished measurements of 127cm (50 inches) in length and 47cm (18.5 inches) in width

Both pieces are designed as practical, elegant accessories suitable for winter weather and cold-weather activities.

Knitting Techniques Used

The Ice Skating Scarf and Wrap employs three distinct stitch patterns to create visual interest while maintaining ease of execution. The foundation of the design is garter stitch, which creates a relaxing, meditative knitting experience. This fundamental stitch forms the basis of the entire project, making it accessible despite the advanced difficulty rating.

The middle section features slipped stitches, which create a dramatic visual effect without requiring the knitter to work with multiple colors simultaneously. This technique adds sophistication and texture while remaining straightforward to execute. The slipped stitch section produces a striking appearance that belies its technical simplicity.

The edges are finished with an i-cord edge, a deceptively simple technique that creates a polished, professional border. The i-cord edge serves the practical purpose of hiding color changes beautifully, contributing to the refined finished appearance of the accessory.

Stitches Featured

  • Garter stitch: The primary stitch throughout the pattern, created by knitting every row to produce horizontal ridges
  • Slipped stitches: Used in the middle section to create textural variation and dramatic visual effects
  • I-cord: Applied as an edge finish to frame the piece and conceal color transitions

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The pattern specifies Cascade Yarns 220 Heathers in worsted weight for construction. This yarn is composed of 100% Peruvian Highland Wool, offering natural warmth and durability suitable for winter accessories. Each 100-gram skein provides 220 yards (200 meters) of yardage, allowing for efficient project planning.

The pattern calls for larger needles, which contribute to the rapid knitting pace despite the overall yardage requirements. The combination of worsted weight yarn and larger needles means the project progresses quickly, allowing crafters to complete their accessory in time for winter weather.

Design Characteristics

Despite being rated as advanced difficulty, the Ice Skating Scarf and Wrap is designed to be a relaxing, meditative knit. The reliance on garter stitch—one of the most fundamental knitting stitches—makes the pattern approachable for experienced knitters seeking a project that looks more complex than it actually is. The three different stitch patterns work together to create visual depth and interest without requiring complicated color work or intricate stitch manipulation.

The use of slipped stitches in the middle section provides a focal point that draws the eye, while the i-cord edging creates a professional, finished appearance that elevates the overall aesthetic of the completed accessory.
