What is Being Made

Kuutio is a reversible knitted blanket featuring a distinctive cube-inspired stitch pattern. Designed by independent designer Eeva Kesäkuu, this project creates a finished textile that looks identical on both sides, making it a versatile and visually interesting throw or blanket suitable for babies, children, and adults. The name Kuutio comes from the Finnish word for cube, reflecting the geometric appearance of the stitch pattern.

Finished Sizes and Yardage Requirements

• Baby size: 70 cm (27 inches) wide by 72 cm (28 inches) high, requiring 390 grams or 920 meters (1010 yards) of yarn
• Child size: 98 cm (39 inches) wide by 154 cm (61 inches) high, requiring 1150 grams or 2720 meters (2980 yards) of yarn
• Adult size: 127 cm (50 inches) wide by 182 cm (72 inches) high, requiring 1750 grams or 4140 meters (4530 yards) of yarn

Stitches and Techniques Used

This beginner-friendly blanket uses only knit and purl stitches to create its cube pattern, making it accessible to knitters new to stitch pattern work. The reversible nature of the design means the cube motif appears the same on both sides of the fabric, eliminating the need to worry about right and wrong sides. The pattern incorporates garter stitch sections at the beginning and end of the blanket, which provide a finished edge and structural stability to the piece.

Gauge Information

The recommended gauge is 19 stitches and 27 rows per 10 centimeters in stockinette stitch, and 21 stitches and 32 rows per 10 centimeters in the cube stitch pattern. Materials: Yarn and Needles

Yarn: This pattern calls for DK weight yarn. The pattern suggests Colourmart Extra Fine Merino 12/29 NM as an example, which provides 355 meters (388 yards) per 150 grams. DK weight yarn offers a good balance between drape and structure for blanket projects.

Needles: The pattern requires multiple needle sizes to accommodate different sections of the blanket:
