Product Description
Lucian’s hat pattern was inspired by my great nephew, Lucian. I wanted to knit a warm, cozy hat for him while he was visiting family in Pennsylvania.
Lucian’s hat is a stockinette stitch beanie with a simple color work pattern added above the brim, knit in the round.
Lucian is one and a half years old, so I sized this hat for a baby.
This pattern works well for color work beginners.
If you need more information on color work, there are lots of YouTube videos demonstrating the technique.

What Is Being Made
Lucian's Hat is a beginner-friendly color work baby beanie pattern designed by Lorraine Pento of Knits on Main. This warm, cozy hat was inspired by the designer's great nephew, Lucian, and is sized for a baby approximately one and a half years old. The beanie features a simple color work design that makes it an excellent introduction to stranded knitting techniques for knitters new to working with multiple colors.
Knitting Techniques
This pattern uses knitting in the round as its primary construction method, allowing for seamless fabric and a professional finish. The design incorporates color work (also called stranded knitting), where two colors are carried across the row to create a pattern. The color work section sits above the brim, adding visual interest while remaining accessible for beginners. The pattern includes decreasing stitches toward the crown to shape the hat properly.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette stitch — the primary stitch throughout the hat, creating a smooth, classic knit fabric
- Color work stitches — simple stranded knitting where two yarn colors are worked together to form the pattern
Materials
Yarn: Debbie Bliss Rialto DK, an extrafine merino wool superwash yarn. The pattern requires one 50g ball (105 meters / 114 yards) each in Duck Egg (019) and Ecru (002), for a total of approximately 210 meters of yarn.
Needles: US 6 (4mm) circular needles measuring 12 inches (30.5 cm) for the main knitting, plus US 6 (4mm) double-pointed needles (DPNs) for the crown decreases when stitches become too few for the circular needle. A tapestry needle is needed for closing stitches and weaving in yarn ends.
Gauge: 22 stitches by 30 rows over a 4-inch (10 centimeter) square in stockinette stitch.
