What is Being Made

The Rockrose Scarf is a downloadable knitting pattern for an elegant, botanical-inspired scarf measuring approximately 26.5cm x 151cm (10.5" x 59.5") after blocking. Designed by Charlotte Walford, this intermediate-level project features a selection of original lace patterns inspired by blooming flowers, with a distinctive lace border that showcases creative transitions between different stitch patterns.

Techniques Used

This knitting pattern employs several advanced techniques suitable for intermediate knitters. The design features lace knitting as the primary technique, utilizing multiple botanical-inspired stitch patterns that transition seamlessly into one another. The scarf incorporates a provisional cast on using a crochet hook and waste yarn, allowing for a professional finish. The pattern also includes bead embellishment, with beads added using a 1.0mm crochet hook to enhance the floral aesthetic. Blocking is essential to achieve the finished dimensions and to properly set the lace patterns.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Rockrose Scarf features multiple distinct stitch patterns throughout its length:

• Leaf chart pattern – worked at a tension of 21 stitches and 28 rows to 10cm (4") using 3.75mm needles
• Tulip chart pattern – worked at a tension of 21 stitches and 24 rows to 10cm (4") using 4.0mm needles
• Original lace border – an unusual design feature that frames the scarf with botanical-inspired lace

Materials

Yarn: One skein of Posh Yarn Audrey Sock in the colorway 'And Rejoice While We May' is required. This luxury yarn blend consists of 60% Mulberry Silk and 40% Cashmere, providing a soft, lustrous finish ideal for lace work. The yarn provides 400 meters per 100g skein. Please note that Posh Yarn colorways are dyed in one-off, non-repeatable batches, making each finished scarf unique.

Needles and Notions: The pattern requires both 3.75mm (US 5) and 4.0mm (US 6) straight needles to accommodate the different tension requirements of the leaf and tulip chart patterns. Additional materials include a crochet hook in a similar size to the needles for the provisional cast on, waste yarn for the cast on method, five stitch markers (optional), a 1.0mm crochet hook for bead application, and 40 beads in size 6 or larger (the sample uses Miyuki Triangles size 5).
