Sea Salt and Roses Crochet Shawl by CJ Brady Designs
Project Overview
Sea Salt and Roses is a large right-angle triangular shawl designed by CJ Brady Designs as a downloadable crochet pattern. This intermediate-level project combines two distinct stitch sections to create a sophisticated, wearable garment with a beachy and romantic aesthetic. The shawl is named after the beautiful color combination used in the original design: Knit Picks Twill Fingering in Sea Salt Heather and Rose Water Heather colorways.
Construction and Design Structure
The shawl features a geometric right-angle triangular shape that begins at a single point at the bottom and expands upward and outward as you work through the pattern. This construction method allows for intuitive shaping without complex decreases or complicated stitch manipulation. The design is divided into two distinct sections, each with its own stitch pattern and purpose.
Stitch Patterns and Techniques
Section One: The main body of the shawl uses a simple mesh stitch pattern worked over a two-row repeat. This straightforward stitch creates an open, airy fabric that is ideal for a large shawl while maintaining structural integrity. The repetitive two-row pattern minimizes counting and allows for a relaxing, meditative crochet experience.
Section Two: The second section incorporates a coordinating color yarn and features a lace stitch pattern worked over a four-row repeat. This lace section adds visual interest and delicate detailing to complement the mesh body of the shawl. The four-row repeat remains simple and manageable, keeping the overall pattern stress-free.
Yarn and Materials
- Yarn Weight: 4-ply fingering weight
- Recommended Yarn: Knit Picks Twill Fingering (as used in the original design)
- Color Combination: Two coordinating colors—Sea Salt Heather for the main body and Rose Water Heather for the lace section
- Tools: Crochet hook (size to be determined by yarn weight and personal gauge)
Skill Level and Accessibility
Designed as an intermediate crochet project, Sea Salt and Roses is accessible to crafters with foundational crochet knowledge while remaining engaging for more experienced makers. The pattern emphasizes simplicity and relaxation, with minimal stitch or row counting required. Both the mesh and lace stitch patterns are described as simple and easy to execute, making this an ideal project for those seeking a no-stress crochet experience without sacrificing visual impact or sophistication.
Design Inspiration
The designer chose to name this shawl after its yarn colors rather than following a typical naming convention. The combination of Sea Salt Heather and Rose Water Heather evokes a beachy, romantic aesthetic that influenced both the project's name and its visual presentation. The soft, muted heather tones of the Knit Picks Twill Fingering yarn showcase the stitch patterns beautifully and enhance the overall elegance of the finished garment.
