What Is Being Made

The Snowflake Headband is a reversible, double-thick knitted headband designed as a bottom-up construction project. This headband measures 4.5 inches tall by 9 inches long and features a solid color on one side with a striking snowflake motif on the reverse. The reversible design ensures both the interior and exterior surfaces are equally polished and beautiful, making it a versatile accessory suitable for wearing either side out.

Construction Method and Techniques

This headband is knitted as a singular tube that is then folded inside itself and knitted together during the bind-off process. This innovative construction technique creates the double-thick structure while keeping all colorwork floats hidden between the two layers, resulting in a clean, finished appearance on both sides. The project is rated at an Advanced Beginner skill level, making it an excellent choice for knitters looking to expand their technical abilities.

Stitches and Techniques Used

• Provisional Cast On: Used to create a temporary cast-on edge that can be picked up later for the folding and joining process
• Stranded Colorwork: The primary technique used to create the snowflake pattern, involving carrying two colors of yarn across rows
• Working in the Round: The headband is constructed using circular needles to create seamless, tubular knitting

Materials and Tools Required

Yarn: Two different colors of worsted weight yarn, approximately 50 yards each. The sample shown uses Knit Picks Chroma Worsted in the colorways Narwhal and Bare.

Needles and Notions: Two sets of US 7 (4.5mm) 16-inch circular needles are required—one set for the main knitting and a second set for the provisional cast-on edge. Additional tools include scissors, a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, and stitch markers to help track pattern repeats and construction points.
