Product Description
I've been really inspired by all of the heavily cabled knits that are out there. Also, I wanted to design a hat that would use up every bit of this gorgeous yarn. The three different cables are bold enough to stand up to the color changes and variegation of the yarn. With this much detail you'll never be bored while knitting this.
The hat transitions smoothly from a simple ribbing to a cable panel featuring three different cables broken up by a neat line of ribbing. As designed, this hat should be worn as a close fitting beanie to keep your head and ears warm. It has plenty of stretch. Being knit from the brim up makes it easily customizable for some slouch. This hat is sized from child to adult.
Finished measurements are 12 (14.5, 18) circumference and 7 (8, 9)” tall.
Yarn: 1 (1, 2) skeins Spincycle Yarns Dyed in the Wool in Robin S Egg. Note the medium size uses every yard. If you are a knitter who tends to use more yarn buy a second skein to be safe.
Stellar Dendrite Knit Hat by Fatimah Hinds
What Is Being Made
The Stellar Dendrite is an advanced-level knit hat designed by independent designer Fatimah Hinds. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a fitted cap available in three sizes: Small, Medium, and Large. The hat features a sophisticated cable-knit construction combined with stockinette stitch sections, resulting in a textured, dimensional garment suitable for experienced knitters.
Techniques and Construction
This hat is constructed using circular knitting techniques, worked in the round from the cast-on edge upward. The pattern employs a structured approach with marked sections using stitch markers (PM) to organize the cable repeats and maintain pattern consistency across the circumference. The design incorporates both patterned rounds and stockinette stitch sections, requiring knitters to work between chart repeats and plain knit rows.
The crown shaping uses strategic decreases to taper the hat toward the top. Knitters work decrease rounds using the ssk (slip, slip, knit) technique, which creates a left-leaning decrease that pairs aesthetically with right-leaning increases used in the body. The pattern requires working the Three Cable Chart multiple times—5 times for size Small, 6 times for size Medium, and 7 times for size Large—before transitioning to the crown decreases.
Stitches Used
- Knit (k): The foundational stitch creating the stockinette sections and cable base
- Purl (p): Used to create texture and definition, particularly in the cable chart sections
- Knit front and back (kfb): An increase stitch used strategically in certain sizes to adjust stitch counts
- Slip, slip, knit (ssk): A left-leaning decrease used throughout the crown shaping
- Three Cable Chart: A specialized stitch pattern combining knit and purl stitches to create the dimensional cable texture that gives the hat its distinctive appearance
Materials and Specifications
This pattern calls for sport weight yarn, a lightweight yarn category ideal for creating fitted, refined garments. The specific yardage and fiber content details are referenced in the materials section of the PDF. Circular needles appropriate for sport weight yarn and the required circumference are necessary for working this hat in the round.
Sizing and Finished Measurements
The Stellar Dendrite is offered in three sizes with the following stitch counts at the body: Size Small begins with 102 stitches, Size Medium with 136 stitches, and Size Large with 170 stitches. The hat measures approximately 12 to 18 inches in circumference depending on size, with a depth of 7 to 9 inches. Gauge is worked at 18 stitches and 38 rounds per 4 inches in the Three Cable Chart pattern when measured unstretched, making accurate gauge swatching essential for proper fit.
Difficulty Level
Rated as advanced, the Stellar Dendrite requires solid foundational knitting skills. Knitters should be comfortable reading stitch charts, managing multiple stitch markers, working cables, and executing decreases. The combination of chart reading and circular knitting techniques makes this an excellent project for experienced knitters seeking to expand their pattern complexity and cable expertise.
