Product Description
This pattern includes:
- hand drawn label printables for packaging your hats
- written instructions (in U.S. terms)
- a pattern diagram
- a few photos to illustrate the assembly
To create this hat, I used a 5 mm crochet hook and a skein (200-250 yards or 183-229 meters) of worsted weight acrylic yarn.
I love the fun rippled texture of The Wave Beanie! It has a lot of stretch to it so you can wear it many times between washes without worrying about it becoming loose. This is more of an intermediate pattern but with a little bit of focus it’s totally possible for a beginner to complete this project.
The Wave Beanie by Picot Pals
What Is Being Made
The Wave Beanie is a downloadable crochet pattern designed to create a textured, dimensional beanie hat. This intermediate-level project produces a finished beanie measuring 17 inches (43 cm) wide by 11 inches (28 cm) tall when laid flat. The design features a distinctive wave pattern created through alternating stitch techniques that give the hat visual interest and depth.
Construction Method
This beanie is worked flat in rows rather than in the round, meaning the crocheter works back and forth on a flat piece before assembly. Once the flat piece is completed, it is stitched together using a tapestry needle to form the finished hat shape. This construction approach allows for precise stitch control and makes the pattern accessible to intermediate crocheters who may be more comfortable with row-based rather than circular construction.
Crochet Stitches and Techniques Used
- Single Crochet (sc): Used as a foundational stitch throughout the pattern, particularly in the edge sections
- Half Double Crochet (hdc): Creates texture and height variation within the wave pattern repeats
- Slip Stitch (sl st): Forms the distinctive wave texture by creating raised, compact stitch sections that alternate with taller stitches
- Back Loop Only (BLO): A technique where the crocheter works into only the back loop of stitches rather than under both loops, creating a ribbed or textured appearance that enhances the wave effect
- Chain Stitch (ch): Used to create turning chains between rows
Pattern Structure
The pattern uses a repeating sequence of stitches to build the wave texture. The core pattern repeat consists of alternating blocks of 5 slip stitches with 5 half double crochets, repeated multiple times across each row. This creates a rhythmic, undulating visual pattern. The pattern includes 10 single crochets at each end of the rows to frame the wave repeats and create a balanced, finished appearance.
Materials Required
Yarn: The pattern calls for worsted weight yarn, specifically Yarn Bee Soft & Sleek in the Mustard colorway. Crocheters will need 200 to 250 yards of yarn to complete this project, making it an efficient use of yarn for a complete hat.
Crochet Hook: A 5 mm hook, also known as size H-8, is used throughout the pattern. This hook size pairs with the worsted weight yarn to achieve the specified gauge.
Additional Notions: A tapestry needle is required for assembly and weaving in yarn ends, and scissors are needed for cutting yarn.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 14 rows by 15 stitches over a 4-inch by 4-inch swatch. Achieving the correct gauge is important for the finished beanie to fit properly and display the wave pattern at the intended scale. The finished dimensions of 17 inches by 11 inches create a standard adult beanie size.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters who have mastered basic stitches and are comfortable working with stitch variations and assembly techniques. The combination of multiple stitch types and the back loop only technique provides a good challenge without being overwhelming for experienced beginners or intermediate crafters.
