Product Description
The Whakahoahoa Shawl is a symbol of friendship. This design was commissioned by Eylul Kilim, a local yarn shop in Osaka that I’ve had the wonderful opportunity to not only form a relationship with, but also a friendship with the owner, Yuri Kojima. Since moving to Osaka, Yuri has demonstrated the meaning of friendship again and again, welcoming me and my husband into her family, providing assistance, and feeding me cookies and tea whenever I visit her shop. Being able to design a pattern for her shop’s 5th year anniversary is small payment in return.
This shawl is knit side-to-side, from tip to tip, in four main sections: the set-up, the increase, the decrease and then the finishing. The design features a simple diamond motif that is easy to memorize and even easier to knit. The simplicity of the stitch pattern lends itself perfectly to highlighting a beautiful skein of vareigated yarn.

What is Being Made
The Whakahoahoa Shawl is a side-to-side triangular shawl designed as a symbol of friendship. This downloadable knitting pattern creates an elegant shawlette using a simple all-over lace pattern that grows progressively as you work from one side to the other. The triangular construction makes it an ideal accessory for layering and draping.
Knitting Techniques
This intermediate-level knitting project employs side-to-side construction, a technique where the shawl is built horizontally rather than from the top down or bottom up. This method allows knitters to easily adjust yardage and customize the finished size by simply knitting more or fewer rows. The side-to-side approach also provides flexibility for working with different yarn quantities, making it possible to complete the design with either one or two skeins depending on desired dimensions.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The Whakahoahoa Shawl features a simple all-over lace stitch pattern that creates an openwork design throughout the garment. The lace pattern is consistent and repeatable, making it accessible for intermediate knitters while still producing a sophisticated, delicate finished piece. Yarn and Materials
- Yarn: Chappy Yarn Merino Sock in the colorway Nouveau 2018 (Lot EE). This yarn contains 75% Superwash Merino and 25% Nylon, offering both softness and durability. Each 100-gram skein yields 460 yards (425 meters). The pattern sample uses 690 yards (640 meters) of yarn, requiring 2 skeins, though yardage is easily adjustable for single-skein versions.
- Needles: US 5 (3.75 mm) circular needles, or the size needed to achieve proper gauge. A long circular needle is recommended to comfortably accommodate the increasing number of stitches as the triangular shawl expands.
- Notions: A darning needle or tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends.
Gauge and Finished Measurements
The recommended gauge is 24 stitches by 32 rows per 4 inches (10 centimeters) measured in the lace stitch pattern using the suggested needle size and after blocking. While gauge is not considered crucial to this project, variations in gauge will affect both the final yardage requirements and the overall finished dimensions of the shawl. Blocking is essential for opening up the lace pattern and achieving the intended drape and measurements.
Yarn Characteristics
Chappy Yarn Merino Sock is described as a lovely, springy yarn with considerable bounce and elasticity. The blend of Superwash Merino and Nylon creates a yarn that is both soft against the skin and resilient enough to maintain its shape through wear and washing. These qualities make it an excellent choice for a lace shawl, as the elasticity helps the delicate openwork stitches maintain their definition.
