With our Toes in the Sand Shawl by rhyFlower Knits
What is Being Made
With our Toes in the Sand is an intermediate-level knitted shawl designed by rhyFlower Knits. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished shawl suitable for knitters with some experience beyond the beginner level. The design is crafted using fingering weight yarn and circular needles, making it an accessible project for intermediate knitters looking to expand their shawl-knitting repertoire.
Yarn and Materials
This shawl requires 900 yards (823 meters) of fingering weight yarn. The suggested yarn is AG2N Fingering Weight, which features a blend of 75% Superwash Merino and 25% Nylon, providing approximately 924 yards (845 meters) per 7 ounces (200 grams). The nylon content adds durability and elasticity to the finished garment. Knitters will also need a US6 (4 mm) circular needle measuring 40 inches (102 cm), or the appropriate size needed to achieve the correct gauge, along with a tapestry needle for finishing.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
With our Toes in the Sand employs several intermediate knitting techniques that add visual interest and texture to the shawl. The pattern incorporates the following specialized stitches and techniques:
- Yarn Overs (yo): Used throughout the pattern to create decorative eyelets and lace elements that are characteristic of shawl designs.
- Bobbles: A textured stitch created by knitting multiple stitches into one, turning the work, purling across, turning again, and knitting across before decreasing back to a single stitch. This creates dimensional, three-dimensional embellishments.
- Increases (Inc): The pattern uses standard increase techniques to shape the shawl and create its overall silhouette.
- Decreases: Multiple decrease methods are employed, including K2tog (knit 2 together), K3tog (knit 3 together), ssk (slip, slip, knit), and Sl2-k1-p2sso (slip 2 stitches together knitwise, knit 1, pass slipped stitches over) to create shaping and lace patterns.
- Knit and Purl Stitches: The foundational knit (k) and purl (p) stitches form the base of the pattern structure.
The combination of yarn overs, bobbles, and strategic decreases creates a shawl with both lace and textured elements, making it visually engaging while remaining achievable for intermediate-level knitters.
