Product Description

The first in my fall hiking & camping inspired collection--get outside!!!

Tall ferns lining the worn footpath are just now turning golden, tinged with rust brown at their edges. The tall brown wooden shelter displays a large, colorful map showcasing a maze of trails that weave their way through the woods. Wooden planks cross over bubbling brooks that carry the few leaves that have turned and left their homes. They float down the creeks as passersby walk above. The day is cool, but not crisp yet, the perfect weather for an invigorating hike.

Wood's Edge Hat by Alicia Plummer

Project Overview

The Wood's Edge Hat is an intermediate-level knitted hat designed by Alicia Plummer. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished hat with a circumference of 20 inches (50.5 cm) and a total depth of 8 inches (20.5 cm), making it a classic fitted hat suitable for a range of head sizes.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a knitted hat featuring decorative crown decreases that create textured points. The design is inspired by woodland aesthetics, with the finished hat intended to be blocked thoroughly to smooth out the crown decrease points and allow the fabric to bloom for a refined appearance. The hat is finished with a large fluffy pom-pom on top.

Knitting Techniques Used

  • Circular knitting: The pattern utilizes circular needles or double-pointed needles (DPNs) to construct the hat in the round, eliminating the need for seaming
  • Cable work: A cable needle is required, indicating the inclusion of cable stitch patterns in the design
  • Crown decreases: Structured decreases at the crown create decorative points that are smoothed through blocking
  • Fabric blocking: Thorough blocking is essential to achieve the intended finished appearance and to bloom the merino and silk blend fabric

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The pattern is worked primarily in stockinette stitch, which serves as the base fabric. The gauge is established at 20 stitches and 24 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch on the larger needles. Cable stitches are incorporated into the design, requiring the use of a cable needle to create textured interest. Crown decreases are strategically placed to shape the hat and create the distinctive pointed details at the top.

Yarn and Materials

The pattern calls for Julie Asselin Leizu DK yarn, a premium blend of 90% merino wool and 10% silk. This fiber combination provides both warmth and subtle sheen. The yarn is specified at DK weight, though the pattern is categorized as worsted weight in difficulty and construction. A total of 200 yards (185 meters) is required, which is approximately one 115-gram skein of the recommended yarn.

The pattern requires US size 6 (4.0 mm) circular needles or DPNs for the ribbed sections and US size 7 (4.5 mm) circular needles or DPNs for the main body, allowing for proper gauge and fabric drape. Additional notions include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats, a cable needle for cable work, a darning needle for weaving in ends, and one large fluffy pom-pom for the crown finish.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate, this pattern is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are comfortable working in the round, managing multiple stitches on circular needles or DPNs, reading cable patterns, and executing decreases. The inclusion of cable work and crown shaping requires attention to pattern instructions and stitch placement.
