Sometimes when I think of summer I get this picture of a turquoise sea, rolling gently over a white sandy beach. Imagine the heat of the sun and the cool breeze carrying the scent of salt. This image of summer bliss is what inspired me to design this shawl, which is just right to throw on when the sun goes down and the air becomes a tad chilly. Knitted from the top down, with only 100g of fingering weight yarn, it’s the perfect summer project.
This design features broomstick lace, so called because it is similar to lace created with a broomstick and crochet hook. It is worked over two rows: on the first row the yarn is wrapped twice around the needle between each knit stitch. On the next row, the wraps are dropped to create elongated stitches which are worked in groups of four.

What is Being Made
Zomer Zilt is an intermediate-level knitted shawl design created by independent designer Susanne Visch. This downloadable PDF pattern produces a finished shawl suitable for knitters with some experience beyond the basics.
Craft and Primary Technique
This project is executed entirely through knitting, the primary craft method. The shawl is constructed using circular needles, which allow for working in the round or in flat rows depending on the shawl's construction method. The design incorporates strategic increases and decreases to shape the shawl as it grows from the cast-on edge.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques Used
The Zomer Zilt pattern employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting stitches and techniques:
- Knit (k) and purl (p) stitches form the foundation of the fabric
- Knit two together through the back loop (k2tog tbl) for decreases that create shaping
- Knit in the front and back of the stitch (kfb) for increases
- M1L (make one left) increase by lifting the loop between stitches from the front with the left needle, then knitting into the back of the loop
- M1R (make one right) increase by lifting the loop between stitches from the back with the left needle, then knitting into the front of the loop
- Bind off (BO) to secure stitches at the completion
- Cast on (CO) to begin the shawl
- Stitch markers placed (PM) and removed (RM) to track pattern sections and repeats
- Repeats (rep) of stitch sequences to build the shawl's structure
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Zomer Zilt shawl is designed to showcase hand-dyed sock yarn. The sample was knitted using hand-dyed sock yarn from Atelier Kleurrijk Vilt, which features a fiber composition of 75% wool and 25% polyamide. This blend provides durability and elasticity. The yarn is supplied in 100-gram skeins with a yardage of 333 meters (364 yards), which is typical for fingering-weight yarn.
The pattern notes that any fingering-weight yarn may be substituted for a similar result, offering flexibility in yarn selection while maintaining the intended finished dimensions and drape of the shawl.
Needles and Tools
The recommended needle for this project is a circular needle in size 4 mm (US #6), measuring 80 centimeters (32 inches) in length. This needle size was used for the sample shawl shown in the pattern. Additional tools required include a yarn needle for weaving in ends and 4 stitch markers for tracking pattern sections throughout the knitting process.
Gauge and Finishing
An important note for knitters: gauge is not critical in this design, which makes it an accessible intermediate project. The gauge measurement provided is from the sample shawl after blocking, indicating that the finished shawl benefits from wet blocking to achieve its intended shape and drape. This relaxation process allows the hand-dyed yarn to bloom and the stitch definition to become fully apparent.
