At Ease Pillow in Red Heart Loop-It (LM6279) – Pattern Summary
About This Pattern
The At Ease Pillow is a beginner-friendly finger-looping project designed by Rebecca J. Venton and published as a free downloadable PDF by Red Heart. The finished pillow measures a generous 18 inches (46 cm) square, making it a satisfying and practical home décor project that works up quickly using an innovative no-tools technique. Because the pattern requires no knitting needles or crochet hooks, it is genuinely accessible to complete beginners — including those who have never picked up a craft tool in their life.
What Is Being Made
The pattern produces a soft, chunky decorative pillow suitable for any room in the home. Two identical squares are constructed separately and then sewn together around a standard 18-inch (46 cm) square pillow form, creating a plush, textured cushion cover. The result is a cozy, modern home accent that showcases the distinctive loopy texture of the specialty yarn used.
Technique: Finger Looping
Finger Looping — trademarked as Finger Looping Fun™ by Red Heart — is the core technique used throughout this pattern. It requires no knitting needles, no crochet hooks, and no prior craft experience. Instead, the crafter uses their fingers to pull loops of yarn through previously formed loops, working directly on a flat surface. This method mimics the structure of a knit fabric but is achieved entirely by hand, making it an excellent introduction to textile construction for absolute beginners.
Because the right side faces the crafter throughout the entire process, there is no turning of the work between rows. The direction of work simply alternates — left to right, then right to left — with each pass creating what the pattern describes as a knit row.
Stitches and Construction Details
The construction of each square begins with a base row of 29 loops, laid out on a flat surface. From there, the following row-by-row structure is followed:
- Row 1 (Right Side): Working left to right, loops of working yarn are pulled through the base row loops from back to front, forming the first knit row. Work is not turned.
- Row 2: Working right to left, loops are pulled through the previous row from back to front. Work is not turned.
- Row 3: Working left to right, loops are pulled through the previous row from back to front. Work is not turned.
- Rows 4–17: Rows 2 and 3 are repeated, continuing to build the square fabric.
- Row 18: A final repeat of Row 2 completes the body of the square.
The bind-off is worked in three steps: the first two loops of working yarn are pulled through the first two loops of the previous row, then the second loop is pulled through the first to secure it. A third loop is then pulled through the next stitch and through the previous loop, and this process continues across the row to finish the edge cleanly.
Two squares are made using this identical process. The finishing involves placing the two squares with wrong sides together and sewing three sides closed using sewing thread and a sewing needle. The pillow form is inserted, and the remaining side is sewn shut. Ends are woven in and can be tacked down with sewing thread to keep them hidden at the back of the work.
