Casting on:
Cast on 36 stitches, and join to work in the round. Place marker. Work in a K2, P2 rib for 9 rounds.
Round 10 – 13: Knit
Rounds 14 – 22: Work this colour chart, knitting all the way across the entire round.
2
Make the heel flap:
Divide your stitches in half (18 stitches). If you are using 2 circulars, you’ll have 18 on each needle; if you are using DPNs just be sure that you are only working 18 stitches for this section of the pattern. We’ll be creating a selvedge edge with slipped stitches that we will pick up for the gusset in the next section of the pattern.
Row 1: Slip one, knit one to end of row
Row 2: Slip one, purl across all stitches to end of row.
Repeat rows 1 and 2 until you have 18 rows. You’ll have 9 selvedge stitches along the edges.
Row 19: Slip one, K10, SSK, K1, turn
Row 20 (wrong side): Slip one, purl 5, P2tog, P1, turn.
Row 21: Slip one, knit to one before the gap, SSK, K1.
Row 22: Purl to one stitch before the gap, P2tog, P1, turn.
Work in this manner, adding one stitch from the other side of the gap each row, until you have worked all of your stitches. You will see a cup forming as you work, to form the heel of the sock.

Make the gusset:
Now that you have your heel, we will rejoin it to the rest of the sock. The round counter resets here!
Round 1: Knit across heel stitches, place marker. Pick up your 9 selvedge stitches on the edge of the heel flap. (I recommend you pick up an extra stitch where it meets the instep of the sock, to avoid a hole, but be sure to do the same thing on the other side to make it equal.) Knit across your 18 instep stitches, and pick up the other 9 selvedge edge stitches on the other side of your heel flap. Place marker.
Round 2: Knit across heel stitches, SSK, knit to the last three stitches, K2tog, K1.
Round 3: Work this chart below, knitting across all stitches.
Round 4: Repeat round 2
Round 5: Knit
Round 6: Repeat round 2
Round 7: Repeat round 3
Repeat rounds 2 and 3 until you have 36 stitches left, and then work the chart below, knitting across all stitches.
Knit 3 rounds.
Pro Tip
Repeat the chart across all stitches as shown, alternating colors every stitch.

Make the toe:
Change colour to silver. You will be decreasing on either side of the heel flap as before. The rounds reset here.
Round 1: K8, SSK, knit to the last 3 stitches, K2tog, K1.
Round 2: Knit
Repeat rounds 1 and 2 twice, for a total of 6 rounds worked.
Round 7: repeat round 1
Repeat round 7 until you have 10 stitches left on the needles. Draw yarn through the stitches and tighten to close. Sew in ends.
