Product Details

About the Design: The motif in this set is an adaptationn of a counterpane motif in Mary Walker Phillips’ Knitting Counterpanes. The scarf is two panels that are grafted at the center. The mittens' thumb gussets are on the palm, for maximum hand movement.

The yarn used is made by a small cooperative of sheep farmers in West Virginia. Settled by Swiss and German immigrants in 1869, many descendants carry on traditional crafts. This yarn is natural & rich with lanolin. I briefly prewashed the yarn prior to knitting, which kept some lanolin, and made for easier knitting.

Yarn: Helvetia Shepherds Association 2-ply, 100% wool, 200 yds/4 oz hanks in Natural: 2 hanks for scarf & 1 hank for mittens

Gauge: 16 sts & 28 rows = 4” (10 cm), and 20 sts & 30 rnds = 4” in St st with size 6 ndls (or sizes to give gauge).

Substitute Yarn Wt.: aran (heavy worsted) I've suggested WYS's BFL aran, as a softer option, or their Jacob aran for the original rustic feel. Happy Knitting! Dawn
