Product Details
This scarf pattern is a good introduction to aran knitting for crafters new to this sort of work, and a satisfying project for those with more experience. It incorporates designs from the island communities of the windswept isles of Aran, off the west coast of Ireland, from at least 500 years ago. Residents made a living from the land and the sea. Spinning and knitting fleeces from the hardy, island sheep provided- much needed, warm garments to keep out the elements on land and at sea.
The scarf has a border of moss or seed stitch, four simple chains to give definition, a central design of seaweed (sometimes referred to as ‘tree of life’) and two cables which represent the fishermen’s ropes.
